Construction of Confederate Monuments in the South reduced lynching. Removal in recent years increased anti-Black hate crimes. Generally, paper makes the case that symbols, like monuments, can substitute for other actions, like violence, that inform racial order.

This South Side Weekly report on the Chicago building raid is well worth reading. Most striking to me are the indications of collusion between federal authorities and the building owner and management to effect a mass eviction at the blighted property. southsideweekly.com/federal-agen...

How common are “survey professionals” - people who take dozens of online surveys for pay - across online panels, and do they harm data quality?

Our paper, FirstView at @politicalanalysis.bsky.social, tackles this question using browsing data from three U.S. samples (Facebook, YouGov, and Lucid):

Under Biden, there was no thermostatic shift in public opinion about the size of government. The public stayed relatively liberal. Take attitudes toward the government's role in health care:

I know people ask these questions to get over social desirability bias (I'm not sexist, but THEY are), but this is silly. Many are reading this as 4 in 10 won't vote for a woman for president (also implied by the headline). It's really that 4 in 10 know a sexist, and I'm stunned it isn't 100%.

Sometimes I think about how from 1935-1975ish, Bell Labs produced an insane amount of revolutionary science and technology, including 11 Nobel Prizes, the transistor, UNIX, C, the laser, the solar cell, information theory, etc. The secret? Provide scientists with ample, steady, no-strings funding.

It's also strange that this is described as a "hit-and-run," which is usually something reserved for a situation in which a driver flees after unintentionally hitting someone. This kid aimed his car at these girls no different than a gun or a missile. His entire intent was to harm them and get away.
