I think it's maybe not good that the dominant genre is now commentary and reaction videos that tell people how to respond to things so audiences never have to decide for themselves how they think or feel about them

The US is boycotting this weekend’s G20 summit in Johannesburg- but it has warned South Africa not to issue a joint G20 statement. This is next level arrogance and disrespect!!!

Across a global sample of more than 9,000 scientists, the authors find that those who are more techno-optimistic report lower engagement in both civic climate actions and high-impact lifestyle changes (like reducing flying, car use, or shifting diets).

⚠️ When “technology will save us” becomes a climate risk!

A new paper from great colleagues takes a careful look at techno-optimism — the belief that technology will largely solve climate change — and what it means for real-world climate action.

It would be so great to see something new for a change and not something from an existing franchise. As much I like SG, I want some new sci-fi that can actually help us dream of different, more sane futures. Frikken postmodern hell.
[Ongoing thread] New Stargate TV show

We knew it was coming!

"Amazon MGM Studios has greenlighted another series based on popular MGM IP, giving a series order to Stargate for Prime Video. The new installment in the classic sci-fi franchise comes from Martin Gero, a Stargate veteran and...."

Phrenology but make it digital. Cool.
Researchers are now saying that AI can find correlations between facial characteristics and success on the job.

The Economist says that corporations would have a “strong incentive” to deploy this technology when looking at applicants.

Cyclist turns down trans exclusionary honour for woman cyclists (and you can feel the BBC’s teeth grinding about it).

"If they don't want to ride with all women, then it's not the kind of ride I want to be part of".
Woman refuses Cycling UK award over trans women being left out
Claire Sharpe says she disagrees with Cycling UK only naming biological women in their top 100 list.

1,019 glaciers have disappeared since 1973 in Switzerland! ✝️

1st nationwide assessment of vanished glaciers:
>40% of the glaciers inventoried in 1973
~13% (47±3 km²) of total glacier area loss! 🧊🔥

But, as it is based on the latest inventory (from 2016), the actual figures are far much higher! 📈 😰

Out on the bicycle. My regular coffee shop closed. So it's been rather frustrating to get out regularly. Half an hour on the bicycle though means I can do 7 km rather than the regular 2.5 km per foot. This makes some other places accessible. Something that was a very big ask a year and half ago.

Wyrmspan is one of the best games I've played this year. Really looking forward to find more games from Connie.
Wyrmspan and Apiary designer Connie Vogelmann has taken the plunge into full-time board game design following the huge success of her first two creations - and the destruction she says is being caused by Donald Trump in her former career as a grants law attorney:

Why historians must write for general readers! 📚 Imagine % of Britons who are also unaware that the British monarchy played a pivotal role in the transatlantic slave trade & expansion of African slavery in the Caribbean/wider Americas. There’s a book for that👇—& many other must-read history books.

That's also why Palestinians continue to exist on bluesky despite its embedded zionism. Because they know everywhere is anti Palestinian. And they're using what means they have to reach out for help.
And it's like wow how are Black people existing on bluesky if there's so much antiblackness here. So lesson one of being Black is that everywhere is antiblack. So you just pick your flavor of antiblack & the heat level of the antiblackness.
