Did the United States really spend trillions of dollars on winning the Cold War, only for its president in 2025 take orders from a Russian dictator?

This is an earth-shattering humiliation for America of which its reputation may never recover.

On the 34th anniversary of the end of the USSR, I’m reposting my article from earlier this year, which argued that we should have understood the moment as liberation rather than only as collapse: www.eurozine.com/liberation-n...
Liberation, not collapse
The fall of the Berlin Wall, and not the human chain across the Baltics, is emblematic of 1989. But what if this show of unity had become iconic of communism’s disintegration? Could acknowledging East...

After Marjorie Taylor Greene held a news conference at which she threatened to name abusers in the Epstein files, Trump called her.

Greene was in her Capitol Hill office. Everyone in the suite of rooms could hear him yelling at her.

According to Greene, Trump replied, "My friends will get hurt."

I think we can see how serious this administration is about a genuine peace in Ukraine from this offer - what kind of a security guarantee has a time limit on it?
In a WhatsApp chat with reporters as he returned to Europe on Monday, Zelenskyy said a US security guarantee currently under discussion would initially be valid for 15 years, and while this could potentially be extended, such a duration would be too short. as.ft.com/r/1c5be28f-d...

I'm not saying a US state fracture of a MAGA White House at war with Congress is the only or most likely scenario. Tough moves by Dems, the fracturing of the GOP, firm decisions in the Pentagon, Langley and DoJ can all head it off.

But these risks are now in play in ways unthinkable a decade ago

So if over 2026 it looks increasingly certain that Democrats take control of the House or Senate than watch out for language from Trump, Vance, Miller et al claiming that mid-terms will be "fixed" and Congress "illegitimate".

That's a path to armed ICE or CBP goons storming Congress.

Trump is too inept to be of use to US allies or adversaries while Vance wants to pursue an arrogantly deluded path that turns US allies into more adversaries.

2026 mid-terms look like the last moment through which this slide into self-inflicted American decline can be reversed.

Everyone talks about crisis in Ukraine, the EU, Russia, China, Africa, the Middle East and the rest.

But at the heart of the destabilisation of the global order that links each of these challenges is a rapidly escalating America Crisis.

Hardly new or surprising at this point, but it's still so crazy how the US president goes to bat for Russia, aping the Russian government's propaganda, lying to the world on a Russian dictator's behalf, and trying to help Russian military aggression succeed against a US-partnered European democracy.
Trump: "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. It sounds a little strange but President Putin was very generous in his feeling toward Ukraine succeeding, including supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices."

It was called the 1990s. And all it did was enrich Russia, entrench corruption, and set the stage for Russian neo-imperialism.
