He is a very average MLS CB. I guess it helps given the team is extremely awful in the back, but I wouldn’t expect much improvement.

Sounds like a throwback to the Olsen days. Get the feeling DC will revert back to Bennyball smh.

Is DC closer to a championship? That’s the question that’s gotta be asked, Roche! 🤦
Did they need help in the backline? Yes.
Could Markovic be a stabilizer for years to come? Yes.
Is there an outside chance he could be sold for profit? Sure.

Simmonds just feels like a game changer from day one who could energize the fanbase AND command a big transfer fee in a few years.
D.C. United has selected Canadian defender Nikola Markovic from NC State with the No. 1 selection at the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.

They’ve got a college pick and a poacher who needs service? Idk but I’d would use the word “set’ it’s too strong.
Felt like the writing was on the wall when they announced Baribo and got Gabe Segal in the Re-Entry Draft this week.

They prob feel set at CF.

FWIW, I can envision Simmonds ending up as an 8 (Pogba type).
I'm sure that has a bit of truth behind it, but I don't think any forward we could draft would help us right away. We're a mess on defense with no CB depth beyond Tubbs, while Simmonds would be behind Badji, Murrell, Karamoko and whoever else we bring in.

Hey, Bennyball was awesome, right?
Isn't it awesome that this is what we've been reduced to as DCU supporters?

So the vision is "car crash soccer". Even RBNY is moving away from that. Nice to see DCU still is behind the times both tactically and fiscally.

Getting a TAM level guy from Philly is "one of the biggest signings" oh FFS.

History is not on DC’s side. To say the most.
4.5 year contract is probably one of the longest I have seen #DCU give for a DP. This is a massive investment in Baribo to say the least...
D.C. United confirms trade for Israeli intl Tai Baribo from Philly. Terms presumably to be announced later today. He signs a DP contract through 2029-30 after making $810k overall this season.

Growth means change and change means competition.
Incredible how the Superdraft transformed from an event held in a ballroom to a Zoom Press conference. It is like the reverse of every league draft in American sports. #MLS
Major League Soccer today announced the eligible player list for the 2026 MLS SuperDraft, including five players who signed Generation adidas contracts or as pre-signed seniors. www.mlssoccer.com/news/major-l...

Functional but flawed? *sign* smhl
They've also just kind of spent half-assedly. The stadium, practice facility, academy, etc. have all been significant outlays. But enough to make any of them truly special, or just functional but flawed? Not to mention no Next Pro team.

While I agree the player evaluation has been piss poor but that problem tbh has predated Jason. There’s been a player evaluation problem since 08. It was suppose to get better once AF came online.
This is fighting a battle from the past for D.C. United, who have long been accused of not spending on players despite evidence to the contrary.

Anecdotally, over the last 6 months this complaint finally dried up. People have caught up: their problem hasn't been spending, it's been talent eval.
Interesting detail from the D.C. United press release about Tai Baribo:

“The total transaction value of the trade, including player compensation, exceeds $15 million for D.C. United, a clear investment in the club’s future success.”

Oh man I remember the hype train for these deck chairs.
Edison Flores, Boris Enow, Gabriel Pirani, Nigel Robertha, and Zoltan Stieber were all 7-figure acquisitions. Mohanad Jeahze, José Fajardo, Erik Sorga, Victor Pálsson all cost $500k or more.

You can't be a mid-level MLS spender and miss this often.

baribo is better but will be a zero without service, and if they couldnt get the ball to BENTEKE that well, i think baribo is going to be a scapegoat for what feels like an even worse era of DCU coming up

Dave Kasper signing for sure.

He’s doom to fail in DC.
As a Philly fan, he's a classic poacher with a knack for being in the right place at the right time with just the right touch to redirect a ball into the net. He's not an elite athlete or technician but he's smart, hard-nosed and surprisingly physical in the box. Needs good service to shine.
December 16, 2025 at 7:57 PM
He got the Kosher friendly hook up smh
⚫️🔴 BREAKING: D.C. United has completed the signing of Israel int'l Tai Baribo from the Philadelphia Union, per sources.

Cash transfer worth around $4m. Baribo becomes a DP for D.C. United.

Baribo, 27, has 35 goals in ~4,300 mins over last two seasons for Philly.

In a vacuum, @mattdoyle.bsky.social is right but DC should be Philly in these deals.

Scout a guy, let the guy cook, sell the guy for a profit, clear the spot for an Academy player to fill the void.

Rinse. Repeat.

Instead, DC pays the smarter club and burns resources doing it.
One of these guys cost $4m, the other cost $12m.

Baribo's not going to fix D.C. on his own, but I'm pretty surprised people have a massive problem with this signing. It's a real, actual, high-floor move from Sogut, and that's a good way to start.

Isn’t that what the off and preseason is for?
Gotta be able to spot one of those before you can buy
December 13, 2025 at 3:06 AM
Reeks of Dave Kasper tbh. But the goal isn’t to win and be competitive it’s to not be last lol
Basically, this offseason was always a gamble for DC. Signing 3 DPs, and needing them to pan out and adapt to MLS. Well, at least one of those knows all about MLS, so that's a check!

I'd still love for DC to sign like an MVP level midfielder, no question. Like Gil or Valeri.
December 13, 2025 at 1:30 AM
Yes because DC is known to add quality players to help the cohesion of the team lol
Sure, there’s lots of reasons to think this flops from a DC perspective, but Philly likes to move on from players rather than re-sign them. Baribo is a proven MLS goalscorer. They just need to surround him with other quality players too.
December 13, 2025 at 1:29 AM
We’ve been waiting for somebody to create and control games for DC.
Vibes on the Philly union subreddit are they're sad to see him go but they like the deal terms. This guy is a streaky poacher. We better have a plan to acquire someone who can provide him with service.
December 13, 2025 at 1:28 AM
4 mil for a Benteke lite who will not create? Seems like a bad move tbh.
Holy wow! I had highlighted Uhre as a free agent to watch because i think we want to play like Philly. $4m for a proven MLS striker who works in this system is great work
⚫️🔴 BREAKING: D.C. United is in advanced talks to sign Israel int'l forward Tai Baribo from the Philadelphia Union, per sources.

Would be a cash transfer worth around $4m. Baribo would be a designated player in D.C.

Almost done.
