Yup. Seems like a glaring indictment of investment capitalism that by design it does not allow anything to be perfected. Things can be good enough!
Love how our tools are never allowed to be good enough the way they are. We still use hammers that haven’t changed in 200 years bc they already work, but if they were proprietary tech of HammerSoft they’d work like shit bc investors demanded growth so now HamR v200 uses AI to guess which nail to hit
I don't want new shit. I want Windows to announce they're rolling back like the last five years of crap and also I get to throw tomatoes at their executives.

Unpopular opinion: Pluribus is not that original, and the slow pacing makes it feel like they are making up for a lack of plot. Like if they reveal too much at once, there’s nothing left.

🇺🇸 trifectas get shot at doing something

Obama chose policy (ACA). It didn’t fix the authoritarian problem

Biden chose policy (ARP/IRA). It didn’t fix the authoritarian problem

The platform must be institutional reform next time. Right from the start, as @dhnexon.bsky.social said
If we want to actually be a representative democracy, then the platform needs to be institutional reform. All the Popularism and all the policies follow from that, not the other way around.
- DC/PR/USVI statehood
- Enlarging the House
- MMDs
- New VRA
- Totally revamping SCOTUS: bsky.app/profile/mcop...
- Automatic universal voter registration
- Rewriting the "national emergency" laws: bsky.app/profile/mcop...
- Subordinating the Senate: bsky.app/profile/mcop...
Etc.

On Nov. 28, 1895, 6 vehicles set off from Jackson Park in the U.S.'s first automobile race. The course was 54.36 miles.
The winning time: 10 hours and 23 minutes.
Only two cars finished.

130 years later, I'm celebrating the anniversary by biking the route.
It's time to race some cars!

There is no congruent way to look at generative AI and think “this is the future.” The most well known fact about it is that it messes up all the time, the next being that it loses lots of money.

I was on my third watch through so I thought I was safe but now I have to go change my shirt.

Call me controversial, but technology that leads vulnerable people into crisis and even holds their hand as they die by suicide should not be endorsed by schools and universities, we should not be giving discounted subscriptions to this monstrous tech to young people AT ALL
The boyfriend of a friend of my son's has spent several weeks in a psych ward due to Chat GPT induced psychosis. He isn't suicidal but AI encouraged him down a toxic and paranoid wormhole until he became completely delusional. Evil stuff.
1.This is not the only known example we know of ChatGPT cheering on a vulnerable young person to die by suicide, this time it is a recent Texas A&M grad
2. Every single university that has invited OpenAI into our midst should be asked to account for their choices.

SNAP is probably the most effective federal dollar we spend in terms of long term domestic economic outcomes.

that isn’t why you should support it; you should support it because it is a moral imperative to feed the hungry.

but it’s why even a growth-oriented ghoul shouldn’t oppose it.

Shouting this thread from the rooftops. There are so many white Chicagoans whose impressions of the neighborhoods that house the geographic and demographic majority of the city are just an accumulation of assumptions and other people's stories. That has consequences.
Most ppl know that Chicago (home of modern urban segregation) is a very segregated place but I don't think most outside Chicago (+many Chicagoans!) understand how the *distances* involved and *depth* of segregation mean most white ppl have ZERO visibility into many Black and Latine neighborhoods
