Newsletter: Our digital lives are unregulated growth-hacked ecological disasters. The modern tech ecosystem's growth-at-all-costs mindset is actively harming billions of people, pushing them toward authoritarianism for profit. We must fight back.

Never Forgive Them
In the last year, I’ve spent about 200,000 words on a kind of personal journey where I’ve tried again and again to work out why everything digital feels so broken, and why it seems to keep getting wor...

Dril: In my tweet I invented the Racism Dial as a cautionary tale.

LA Times: At long last, we have created the Racism Dial from classic Dril's tweet "Don't Create The Racism Dial".
LA Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong says his bias meter will use an A.I. patent called the “Reasoning Engine.”

“The meter will be displayed atop a piece of writing to tell readers where it ranks on a scale that will range from ‘far left’ to ‘far right.’”

Just learned that the history department I got my BA from has shrunk considerably and been absorbed into a wider 'humanities' dept. There were 100 students in my first year class in 2001. Without historical analysis we are at the mercy of the plastic, hollow and blind cult of consumer capitalism.

A while back, BS/BC decided to stop covering all autism evaluation visits. Didn't tell the practitioners or members beforehand, just randomly started denying claims. Caused a bit of a scramble. The solution? Drs just re-coded everything as an anxiety visit where autism was "accidentally" discovered.

also just for general awareness notice how cops are interpreting “delay, deny, depose” as a threat when people use it against health insurance companies but don’t seem to care that that’s how health insurance companies increase their profits.

I've said before, I have it as a contract point that my narrators have to be actual live humans (same with my editors, copyeditors, cover artists, etc). If you think your work can be sufficiently narrated by an "AI" then you are implicitly saying some very negative things about your work.
Former audiobook narrator and publisher. This was rampant over 2 years ago in the narration community. A few big names sold their voice prints for hefty 6 figures, and now authors are turning to AI and talking about it at conferences as a way to make more money without sacrificing quality. 2 years?!
