the really heartbreaking thing is when i interview Chinese devs (or Korean devs as well) or even just like network with them I get thanked for treating them respectfully.... and i think that points to a much larger issue that some devs face bc of the way american journalists talk about their work
I really hate how games media handles anything out of China: www.thegamer.com/clair-obscur...

We're getting a gorgeous remake of one of their best RPGs ever, but the clown does zero research about it and just goes "I'm getting a lot of Boss Baby vibes from this..."
We've Got Our First Clair Obscur-like, And It's A Chinese Game Called Sword And Fairy 4: Remake

One of my favourite Mario 64 modders experimented briefly with using ChatGPT to help with code optimization. I feel that a 'Hey man, knock that off, it sucks' is a more useful response than 'You are forever dead to me, traitor to humanity, I can never trust anything you do ever again!'.

The games industry brings in 300 billion dollars a year. The guy who made DOOM gets his projects canceled, the guy who made Katamari Damacy is broke, everyone in your feed is begging for a job and there are 50 new games coming out on Steam every day all going towards buying Gabe Newell's next yacht
Keita Takahashi (Katamari, Wattam, Noby Noby Boy) has moved back to Japan, and says he may be forced to quit the games industry due to To a T underperforming.

He also says he'd love to work on Katamari again, and for someone to invest in his studio.

I've been a pretty consistent critic of Steam ever since the day it launched, but that has been slowly condensing into actual hate recently, thanks to shit like this.
Valve has now rejected my complaint, confirming that "I don't like muslims" is a valid reason to leave a negative review on a game on Steam

This is where we're at now.

To clarify, there's nothing in this game that wouldn't pass muster in an M-rated film.

There are people spreading malicious rumors about it, claiming that it is more extreme.

It reminds me of Night Trap, supposedly one of the most transgressive games of its age. Reality: Milder than Power Rangers.

Haha, I knew the game had some redundancies but this is ridiculous. They've squashed Helldivers 2 down from a 154gb install (!!!) down to just 23gb (!!!!!!).

It's an opt-in toggle as they're still doing a bit of testing on it, but I doubt there'll be many issues.

I'm updating my Big Spreadsheet Of Cool Free PC Games again!

I merged in all the incomplete entries, which I'm working on chipping away at and filling in the details of, which has bulked the list up to 324 items. But some of them are for entire series' or platforms, so probably ~400 games here.

A reminder that for every billion dollars made on PC gaming, Newell pockets $300m.

He keeps out of the public eye better than some billionaires, but he is still a libertarian billionaire, and billionaires should not exist.

It's recently come to my attention that someone made a fake UZDoom website. DO NOT CLICK IT!

The only official website for UZDoom is ZDoom dot org and the ONLY official place to get future UZDoom downloads would be the official UZDoom Github page!

Stay safe out there y'all

Among the MANY games I'm still looking forward to, I'm hoping we get the final update for Space Cats Saga this year, a guilty-not-guilty pleasure Doom mod.

Final version will have 5 episodes & 7 playable characters, one of which is Doomguy. He's nearly shortest.

With just a few hours left on the Steam Autumn Sale, I did one last roundup of indie gems to get cheap before closing time - everything here 50% or less.

Forgive any typos. Brain running on less sleep than usual!
Aah, here's a deep cut sales recommendation - how does King Of Dragon Pass, But You're An Actual Dragon sound?

Golden Treasure is a prose-heavy dragon life sim/RPG. Complex, messy & very replayable. Hunt, hoard, learn magic, commune with nature, and decide what to do wish these weird 'human' things
Save 50% on Golden Treasure: The Great Green on Steam
Golden Treasure is a game for those who carry dragons in their hearts. Hunt, explore, survive, and become Great among the True Children of Sun and Earth.

And because some people are still misreading things: Reverse Collapse is NOT a gacha game.

There are games sharing its setting that ARE, but this one is a fully self-contained (and lengthy) strategy RPG with no microtransactions or DLC except for a single formal-wear skin pack.

Oh no... Andrew Dice wasn't just a cool, friendly pillar of the community, he was one of the people most influential in bringing down the boundaries between the Japanese indie games scene and the rest of the world.

He opened doors and brought so many great stories to us. Farewell to a real one.
Absolutely devastated by this news. SpaceDrake was no doubt a huge influence in drumming up interest for Japanese indie games localized into English and pushing for them on digital distribution storefronts like steam. Huge loss. Might be time for another playthrough of Recettear in his honour.

This is why I proudly do those hidden gems roundups every few months. There are SO many great games that just did not sell big, often for reasons as arbitrary as 'It was a day ending in Y'.

Games hardware is plateauing and the Steam Deck is a great bottom line for PC now. Games don't 'age' easily.
a huge number of inspired, creative and very very worthy-of-people's time games come out daily on steam and what inspires me is the hope that people will still find them and play them even if and when they aren't hollow knight level successes. the idea that maybe we can have careers that way
