THIS
The commodification of play is a scandal. Indoor play areas that have to be driven to, soft play, trampoline parks, expensive 'experiences' that have to be booked & organised, & attended by adults for the duration.
When all kids actually need is green space and a safe way to get to it.
parent eventually drives child to park for the always exciting pre-organized play date.

Another way to look at it: for every $1 a bike causes, an SUV causes *$55k* worth of damage to a road
When mad drivers tell you that you, a cyclist, don't belong on roads because you don't pay registration and the gas tax, show them the Road Damage Calculator. Compare, for example, the damage made by a small SUV and a longtail cargo e-bike. Very different orders of magnitude roaddamagecalculator.com

[mounts well-worn soapbox] The fanciest predictive ped safety analysis would fall short of just taking a dang inventory of the crossings at every bus stop pair systemwide.

There’s not a single big correlate to ped fatalities that isn’t addressed by focusing on/around bus stop pairs.
A 5-lane road with no marked crossings and bus stops on both sides is just a recipe for transit users getting killed.

This is criminally bad design, and yet it's the standard practice across much of the US.

Ban right on red.
Yesterday, I was very minorly hit by a driver turning right on red from Greenfield Ave onto Gallatin because he simply didn’t look to his left to see me in the crosswalk before letting off the brake, which was the second time this year I’ve had a close call AT JUST THIS ONE INTERSECTION
More than half of Toronto drivers in a Universtiy of Toronto study didn't look for people walking or on bikes before turning right. Study used eye-tracking tech.

Increasingly deadly vehicles, dumb laws, and irresponsible driving equal people being injured and killed.

took the lane on gallatin running yesterday in front of the new whataburger. disgusting that we allow developers to destroy the sidewalk without fixing it the next day or something. in montreal if this was the case, they'd mark off the right lane as a sidewalk until the sidewalk is open again.

Couching those sit down scooterbikes in accessibility framing changes the dialogue ^kj cc @benvaught.bsky.social @careyrogers.bsky.social @kemcdonell.bsky.social
"Veo’s...latest rider survey found that nearly one in four users (24%) identify as having a disability"

"A separate year-long accessibility study showed that seated and throttle-assisted vehicles could double adoption among adults over 45 and riders with mobility challenges"

Cool to see this focus
The Veo Trike: Accessibility as a priority, not an afterthought.

Zag unpacks Veo’s upcoming seated electric Trike, crafted through years of co-design with the people the shared micromobility industry has traditionally left behind.

The assumption that people only use transit to get to and from work in downtowns has been detrimental to transit ridership.

Step 1 in the radicalization of a safe streets advocate:

Heretofore regular person: I just want a stop sign [or marked crosswalk or speed humps or some other small thing] in this dangerous spot.

DOT: No, that would cause vehicle delay, which is a safety hazard.
Because congestion is literally a fate worse than death

A priority among local transportation agencies remains avoiding traffic jams rather than responding to concerns of pedestrians in the most danger, who are more likely to live in poor neighborhoods and wield less political influence #iTeachMath wapo.st/4polhCJ

Traffic deaths are policy choices.
“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas & city center in 2021.”
Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death
The capital city is Finnish’ed with car-related fatalities.

It's no accident we see "carrots", such as nudges or behaviour change programmes, overrepresented in policy tools used to effect modal change.

We need a “new normal” with regard to mobility, which sees sustainable travel as default not an alternative and which actively disrupts current patterns.
