Time for a pinned post - pleased to meet you, I’m Nicky Bond. I write the Leeza McAuliffe Stories (the literary lovechild of Adrian Mole and Judy Blume) and I care far too much about Eurovision. Let’s go.

Like other queer movies (e.g. All of Us Strangers), the brilliant Pillion looks likely to be overlooked at the Oscars this year - but bravo the BAFTAs, where it has been longlisted for 5 awards, including Best British Film.
Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård are up for Actor and Supporting Actor.

I hope Renee Nicole's bravery lights the blue touchpaper of mass civil resistance. Not just for the sake of America, but for the whole world. Murders like hers, especially caught on video, have a recent history of doing that.

She was a warrior. They are cowards killing, quite literally, The Good.

In this Year of Reading, a gentle reminder:
The best way to get your kids reading is to let them see *you* reading. The way to *stop* your kids reading is to criticize their choices, or to make reading a competition, or a punishment, or a race, or a learning tool. Let it be fun. Let them read.

People say it’s odd that governments still use Twitter/X to communicate, but it’s only like how the John Major government announced its ongoing Maastricht negotiations through the readers’ erotic stories pages in Men Only magazine.

The cassette of this was in a Freshers’ Week welcome back when I went to Uni in 1996. Pre- internet, with no telly in my room, I listened to it A LOT.

This exposes the core lie on which the entirety of “gender-critical” transphobia is based.

The transphobes’ entire campaign is based on the false claim that they represent cis-women.

The number of signatories to this, is way higher the number of signatories to their transphobic WDI “declaration”.
We are now at 75k signatures, with many messages of support on Instagram, Facebook and here.

This is a genuine groundswell of love over hate, and a call to focus on the real harms faced by women and girls.

Thank you all who’ve signed and shared. Let’s keep it going 💜

will also add - yes, this is my personal crusade - that turning podcasts into videos implicitly asks women to once again make more effort than men, as the bar for "camera-ready" for one gender is obviously higher than for the other

George Michael died on Christmas Day in 2016.
He will be remembered for his incredible songwriting talent, his gorgeous vocals and for the greatest non-apology video of all time, following his arrest for cottaging.

I’m about to go to bed, but I’m going to scroll through #duvetknowitschristmas because it fills my heart with joy. Happy Christmas gang.

This is excellent. My parents didn't push the 'he is real' stuff either, also because of money. Christmas was still the best time of year, and Santa was a fun fictional character.
One of the most fulfilling things I've done the last couple of years is attempt, incompetently, to be a mentor, whatever one of those is. Anyway, my mentee(?) @matt-taylor.bsky.social wrote this about why his kids don't believe in Santa for the Guardian yesterday and it's bloody good

Tomorrow evening it’ll be my annual duty to vaguely shepherd the activity on the #duvetknowitschristmas hashtag and urge people to give small sums to charity. 7.30pm? Something like that?

Since I posted the Spiced Peaches to go with my Christmas ham earlier, I thought I may as well do the decent thing and alert you to this Slow-Cooked Black Treacle/Molasses ham recipe which I’m planning to do this year. It’s just so very good, and so very easy. www.nigella.com/recipes/slow...

The great debate of our time is here.

Is DIE HARD a terrible movie that glorifies violence, with a hero who is the absolute worst? Or not?

I loved recording this. Turns out, I had a LOT of thoughts.
This week's film is DIE HARD.

Don't worry, Nicky and Phil spend little time on the 'is it a Christmas film' debate. Life's too short for that.

However, the 'Is John McClane an absolute wrongun?' question gets much more air time.
