Rustbelt born, Florida raised. Manic Pixie Nightmare Cryptid. I paint unicorns and hoard cats.
My winter break started early, and I’m off for the next two weeks. But before logging off & shutting down I applied to two jobs. We got some unexpected snow so I put up some more tacky decorations, made a batch of muffins, and started thinking about what I want to focus on in the upcoming year.

Brown has over 1,200 cameras and it wasn’t enough because cameras are a security blanket we’ve all been sold. They don’t prevent crimes and they barely solve crimes but in the meantime surveillance companies got rich and no one had to address the societal root causes of crime and violence.
Brown University has over 1,200 surveillance cameras. Why that wasn’t enough to capture video of the shooting suspect | CNN
CNN spoke to several security experts to better understand the growth of Brown’s surveillance system, why its cameras failed to capture the attack or suspect, and the concerns about privacy and academ...

A decent enough number of people CAN be. Have been. Are expecting to be. I have family members who were *excited* about the promised “DOGE” payments. Which, surprise! Never materialized. Neither did the new mom payouts. It’s probably 50/50 these military bonuses will either.
Only a person easily bribed would think that everyone else is easily bribed. $1776 to the soldiers. $1500 to you, to cover a lifetime of medical expenses. $2000 tariff refund.
A man with billions of dollars thinks you can be bought for 2 grand.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

Dan probably doesn’t read, so…

But it’ll be funny if he shares a name with a character who perishes in a really gruesome and kind of hilarious fashion in Stephen King’s next novel. 🙃
Reminder that Dan Bongino doesn’t know who Stephen King is

The role of the underlings in the current administration is inflating him & placating his whims and at the same time insulating him into a self-perception bubble. Because they are all eyeing the further consolidation of power & how they can use it themselves when he’s no longer their useful idiot.

Instead of subjecting myself to what apparently was an unhinged diatribe, I read about how coyotes are the quintessential American species. And then I went outside and stared at the night sky for a little bit.

It was never about "free speech", it was always about controlling who got to speak and about what. They didn't like that the academy (for all it's failings) was teaching critical thinking or holding up a mirror to evaluate history through a critical lens.
“At Texas A&M, internal emails show staff are using AI software to search syllabi and course descriptions for words that could raise concerns under new system policies restricting how faculty teach about race and gender.”

I keep seeing the data centre boom being presented as a sort of 'training gym' for infrastructure build-out, as if it's a tide that lifts all boats (particularly for renewables, transmissions etc).

The reality: it's a black hole whose gravity well is sucking resources from socially-useful stuff

I’m so exhausted by the proliferation of AI garbage.

I do a lot of unfollowing and blocking on various platforms to try to minimize being inundated by that trash and I hate having to put so much effort into controlling the flood. But it’s either that or give up entirely.

Bite me.

I have a Real ID, that I had to provide documentation proving my identity, and pay an additional fee to procure. I’m not carrying my passport in my own goddamn fucking country.
Bovino, the man overseeing mass deportations, publicly declared that we must all have our papers on us, at all times, or we could be stopped, harassed, kidnapped, and detained, as they did with the man in this case, who is a US citizen.

OF COURSE one of the first comments is about how what’s branded as American cheese isn’t “real” cheese.

Except it is literally cheddar cheese with sodium citrate added for meltability. That is why it’s labeled as a “processed cheese food” because there’s an additive in the process of manufacture. 🧀
If you're gonna spam a thread arguing about what's "real" cheese...

...you're not just unhinged.

Hinge was never an option.

This is…idiotic. Imbecilic. Jesus fuck, we’re really going to advocate outsourcing parenting to the slop machine and laugh about it. Just call your mom, Sam! Or is she not speaking to you because you’re a weird loser who needs the robots to tell you how to change your own baby’s diaper?

Sam Altman: "I cannot imagine figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT."
