If I were a NY voter, I'd remember that Elise Stefanik consciously remade herself as super-Trumpy when that's the way the wind blew. Personally, I'd elect a governor w a solid core.

I have so many Bulwark favorites and Will Saletan is near the top of the list.
Don't fall for the Republican excuses about Tuesday's elections. By every measure — militarization, deportation, gerrymandering, job approval, and asking voters whether he affected their decisions — the exit polls show Trump cost his party hundreds of thousands of votes.
Hey, Republicans: Blame Trump
Exit polls show Tuesday’s election was a referendum on the president and his policies.

My NYT daily email: "Democrats, furious about President Trump’s remaking of American government and society, turned out in extraordinary numbers for an off-year election to sweep virtually every competitive race." They need better political analysis. Some of those votes were not made by Democrats.

What did people do before SNAP?”
They died.
Healthcare, vaccines, disability support, education & food assistance are vital to our survival.
They’re why the average lifespan isn’t 35 anymore

Trump is a failing authoritarian whose approval ratings are tanking.
Like any bully, when he feels humiliated, he lashes out.
But what he doesn’t realize is that his authoritarianism and his bullying are waking up America’s great sleeping giant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXHPCL12QIg

Who will be our present day Deep Throat? Secrets are difficult to keep. Eventually enough evidence will be gathered and the regime will fall. (Nothing specific. Just enjoying “All the Presidents’ Men” again and hoping.)

This event has exposed so many of my friends/relatives to me. I was saddened for the country and now that sadness hits home in a bitter way. Popehat (now "changes names with the times" hat - follow him just for that) has set my thinking to rights. I am still sad but at least I am not the crazy one.
I have a couple of comments about the "free speech hero" narrative about Charlie Kirk.
First, was Charlie Kirk really notable for supporting the free speech of people he disagreed with? I haven't noticed that, though I could have missed it.

So whoever did this then should be President, not him. What a visionary! 🙄 I don't mean to make fun because this who situation is so incredibly vile but that is written here is most telling. It clearly points out the absurdity in thinking it isn't him. Come on MAGA - embrace the obvious.
Just want to make sure I understand this. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO someone forged his signature on a birthday card because they knew Donald Trump would be president and they wanted to make him look bad when Epstein’s birthday greetings inevitably showed up in an evidence locker? Do I have that right?

There was always something that didn't sit quite right with me about the whole "self care" idea. Now I understand why. This doesn't mean we don't take care of our specifics but it does mean it all works better when we look after others. Be the bright spot in someone else's day & you'll benefit, too.
My mother always told me that if I was feeling bad about myself, I should go help somebody. I’ll have to tell her about these findings.
Self-care is overrated—helping others has the biggest benefits for everyone involved
A new 2-week intervention finds that helping others improves well-being more than "self-kindness", with benefits for depressed mood, anxiety, and loneliness due to social connection psycnet.apa.org/record/2026-...

Here is a great Labor Day joke. My husband, the auto mechanic, and I, the chemist, got it immediately and laughed out loud.
Tangent: What is the best way to tell a chemist from a plumber?
Ask them to pronounce "unionized"
Ask them to pronounce "unionized"
Actually I have one that I don't see as often as some of the classics - unison. I don't know where I got it, but I pronounced the written version 'you-NIH-zhun' for a long time and struggled to reconcile it with the spoken word YOU-nih-sun.

I hope people realize how absolutely fucked this situation is.
This isn’t normal. People are resigning all over the place because the government is mishandling our data, ruining our public health services, and generally making Americans less safe.
