lrs

Don't forget your local library too!

Also Texans can get free digital library cards from the Houston Public Library system, no matter what part of the state you're in

Last week I was scheduled to give a presentation on grassroots activism at a university conference on censorship. That conference was censored to the point of being cancelled. So in honor of banned books week, here is some of the info I would have shared on fighting book bans at a local level:

Hello friendos

It would be terrible if you told people about Books Unbanned, a program to get free library cards into the hands of teens and young adults anywhere in the country so they can access e-copies of frequently banned materials.

Freedom to read.

They can sign up here: booksunbanned.com

Listen. Women. We gotta start being smarter. Lives are on the line here. We are intelligent beings who can develop critical thinking skills. YES there is a toxic media environment but not everything can be blamed on 'this idiot gave me bad advice, it's his fault.'
Let me be clear. This claim from RFK Jr. is flat-out false. Scotland just reported finding no cervical cancer cases in vaccinated women -- zero, zilch, zip. This man's advice has been hurting people for years, but this lie will especially harm women. publichealthscotland.scot/news/2024/ja...

Additional scripts for cis het white men who want to be better allies:

“What a weird thing to say”

“Do you hear yourself right now?”

“You shouldn’t say shit like that to people”

“I won’t let you talk to them that way”

“That’s a disgusting opinion to have”

“Shut the fuck up, dude”
Cis men truly need to understand the power of saying “that’s fucked up bro why would you say that” to another cis man
The responsibility for resisting and correcting this behavior shouldn’t fall solely on a specific gender. If you’re a man of conscience and you see another man mimicking Nick Fuentes, fuck him up on sight before the women even get a chance. I mean that.

I’m a public librarian in a degenerating democracy, and I am pleading: Care about your library. Use it. See what programs and events it offers. And pay attention to its governing body. See who the trustees are. Consider running yourself. Libraries will need all the community support they can get. 📚

Right. Here's your to-do list for the next two months to put you in the best possible position to survive what's coming:

1. Renew your passport (or apply for a passport) this week even if it is not expiring in the next four years. Renewing early will give you the maximum 10-year validity period.

Most of us turned to a song, or a book, or a show today, at some point. It's easy to take that for granted and scorn anybody else for doing what you did without thinking. The humanities buoy the psyche.

Go ahead and share your stuff. An artist's insurance bill doesn't get paused for tragedy.
Remember: Books are important. YOUR books are important. YOU are important.

The work of authors and artists is potentially the greatest weapon we have against fascism.

(They know it, too - why else would they try so hard to ban books, restrict access to libraries, and on and on?)

Their books are mostly on bookshare as are I think something like 1,000,000+ others for those of you with print disabilities.
and some states offer sponsored memberships to the service so it’s worth checking in with your local library to see if yours is one.
I've had people tell me directly they couldn't afford my books.

... I sent those people my books.

There's this thing about being financially vulnerable that makes you want to help people who are in your boat. But damn if I don't balk when you just decide to take and flaunt attitude.

#LoveYourLocalLibrary they need the support!
I don't think people understand the gravity of making librarians and teachers *criminally liable* for disseminating information. Fascist shit, from a known playbook. No one has the luxury of being surprised anymore.
Fuck this. Librarians are the best. I stand with librarians and against book banning now and forever.

Pls encourage your followers to make sure they have an up-to-date account at their local library & are using it. Libraries will only continue to exist for the folk we imagine need them if they’re also used by the people we imagine don’t need them (ofc everyone needs them whether they know it or not)
