It’s perplexing that people in the US act shocked about stuff like this. Groups all over the planet have committed genocide against distant family, neighbors, and peoples who look just like them. Intracommunal violence sanctioned by the state and nonwhite people aiding white supremacy aren’t new.

Audre Lorde, in a 1989 commencement address, said, "Remember this, despair is a tool of your enemies. That rumor, 'You can’t fight City Hall,' is circulated by City Hall. Facing the realities of our lives gives us the motivation for action, it gives us the power to change. You are not powerless."

As a teacher and as someone who’s created political education materials, I think we need to make more stuff like this.

A lot of the easily available videos on social issues are riddled with misinformation or disinformation or bad politics or are panels, and often don’t explain how things work.

Since arrests of student protesters* began, there's no one I believed was more at risk than Leqaa Kordia.

Her arrest was hardly noticed, even among the community of solidarity. I think it was 3 mos before a habeas corpus was filed. Her life is in danger.

*She was mistakenly considered a student.
NEW: Rep. Salman Bhojani said lawmakers were denied entry to Prairieland Detention Center, where Leqaa Kordia has been running “a high fever for several days” due to what he called inhumane conditions.

In May, her cousin said she had already lost 50 lbs.

When Mariame Kaba told us that hope is a discipline, I always understood that to mean "I am hopeful in so far as I do". I have never felt an unfounded optimism, but organizing for 20+ years has showed me that so much more is possible.

Ive been spending too much time reading about the origins of the FBI and federal law enforcement again so I did a little thread about ICE:
The DHS and its sub-agencies CBP and ICE are dangerous because they are a federal police force that operates under the direct order of the Secretary of Homeland Security and the president. Before 2002, the president would have had a harder time doing what this one is doing. A doomed arrangement. 🧵

If what ends up happening is MN officials agree to aggressive 287(g) or other cooperation agreements to stop the occupation, that is a terrible Faustian bargain that is closer to total loss than any kind of victory. It sets the precedent that the feds can force your city to play ball at gunpoint

When outraged Germans protested over Aktion T4 in 1941, the Nazi government officially shut down the program. It continued unofficially until the fall of the Nazi government.

Don't take your eyes off of ICE if they back off their current tactics or fire more leaders in the face of mass protest.

I think about Elijah McClain a lot. How he was a sweet, lovely young soul who used to play the violin for stray cats. How brutally his young life ended and how the State sent riot police to interrupt the violin vigil in his name. The cruelty was always the point.

Right wingers are disgusted by community care because in their worldview the only worthy way to relate to others is by displays of power and domination.
rightwingers see people caring about others in their community and instead of finding that inspiring they think it’s some sort of grand conspiracy because they don’t understand what it means to care for others you don’t personally know
