Knitter, mathematician, reader. I love a time loop in tv and movies and an epistolary novel. Angrier than I like to admit.
My villain origin story is that when I was 13 my family went to the movies on December 28 and I wanted to see Muppet Christmas Carol and my dad said it was too late for a Christmas movie so we went to Home Alone 2.

I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

So many things to add to this, but I’ll just give the example of the Mark Twain Project, which has been digitizing for nearly three decades, fairly well-resourced, with a sizable full-time staff.

And they are, optimistically, maybe half done.
When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.
Seems like it's worth posting this one again.

More of this kind of rich person, please.
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

I have 1-2 more days of exam grading, so of course all my library holds came in today. This is better than if they had come in last week.

I'm not sure if people realize the murder strikes are taking place across a large region. It's quite staggering.

Omg I hated the Branagh Orient Express so much I haven’t seen the other two but WHAT.
this is an older, pulpier conceit, i think, and also the reason those new poirot movies are so, so bad. they are more concerned with giving his mustache an origin story (A REAL THING) than with the new characters in the current mystery!

This is posted in a “we shouldn’t have to do this” way and we shouldn’t, but my response is “oh, yeah, that should be in my class bag, probably.”
I carry a kit with a field tourniquet and wound-packing material in my work backpack, and mentally map out shelter / escape options for every classroom I'm teaching in at the start of the semester. I was still a grad student when I resigned myself to sacrificing myself to protect my students.

AS A PROFESSOR, I AM ASKING

HOW ARE OUR STUDENTS SUPPOSED TO LEARN IN THESE CONDITIONS?

HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO GO TO SCHOOL AND TAKE EXAMS KNOWING SOMEONE MIGHT JUST SHOW UP WITH AN EASY TO ACQUIRE AUTOMATIC WEAPON?

HOW??????????
Longer statement from Brown University:

"We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of multiple shooting victims, but we are not able to share their condition. They have been transported to local hospitals."

When I volunteered at the Austin Nature & Science Center 300 years ago, this was phrased to me as "their heads are full of optic nerves & murder. There's no room for anything else."
Me to same owl handler: "Owls are super wise, right? They read loads of highbrow Russian literature and stuff, don't they?"

Owl handler: "No, they actually have very tiny brains, due to the hugeness of their eyes. In reality they are one of the thickest animals you could ever meet."

So thankful for the news out of my statehouse today. I was going to be really annoyed to have had three different districts in five years. Also my congressman is my most responsive rep when I call.

The Dems voted 10–0 against the gerrymander, and the Republicans voted against it 21–19.

A majority of the Republican members of the Indiana State Senate just told Trump to go fuck himself.
The Indiana State Senate is 40 Republicans, 10 Democrats. This result is not even close to nothing.

Here's Ellen Harding Baker's "Solar System" quilt.🧪

This is the story.🔭

Back in 1876, an Iowa mom with 7 kids, E. H. Baker, decided that cooking & raising children wasn’t enough for her.

She started working on a wool quilt showing the solar system.

Real eerie to read this the same day that Martin University in Indianapolis is suspending operations at the end of the semester.
For a couple of years now, I've been fascinated with what's happening at small liberal arts colleges, which are running out of money for reasons unrelated to Trump funding cuts. Businessweek let me go deep on the problems, and one college that's trying to blaze a new trail.
Why a College Fighting for Survival Is Slashing Econ and Physics Majors
At Albright in Pennsylvania, the new president is cutting programs, selling art and real estate, and vowing not to hire anyone with tenure. Is this the way forward for liberal arts colleges?

The number of times I was like “well, I’d like to see the whole stage for this, but ok?” Cast is bananas good, definitely weird choices in the filming.
I just saw the Merrily We Roll Along pro-shot and let me tell you... if you like Jonathan Groff's nostrils and hate seeing set design or choreography or even other people in the same scene, you'll love it!

Wonderful show, absolute car-crash of a pro-shot.
