Japan Day 4
By brilliant coincidence, right around the corner from our Asakusa hotel was Mr. Danger’s Steakhouse, run by deathmatch legend Mitsuhiro Matsunaga. Alas, we didn’t have time to “shop the Matsunaga,” but today was deathmatch day.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

We featured these in the Prehistoric Planet mosasaurs. But an interesting point is that they're even present in desert-dwelling animals, like bearded dragons. Interesting to wonder how widespread they were in extinct reptiles. #lizards #reptiles

Masked thugs knocked out a peaceful protester outside the ICE facility in Portland then dragged his unconscious body away on a utility cart. Witnesses screamed, “He is not moving!” Another woman was tackled. This is state violence.

We document it so no one can deny it.

Share it everywhere.

New: AI chatbots can change voters' minds, according to a pair of in-depth studies published just now in Science and Nature.

How they do it is interesting — and concerning. Gift link: wapo.st/49RSstP
Voters’ minds are hard to change. AI chatbots are surprisingly good at it.
New research suggests AI chatbots can shift people’s political views more effectively than campaign ads on TV.

Just fucking pathetic.

A reminder to a nation with way too many people untethered to facts and truth: There’s no such thing as “The Department of War.” It doesn’t exist. Only Congress has the power to create and name executive departments & agencies. So it’s still The Department of Defense.

Thanks

This is why you don’t execute illegal orders. Because you are responsible

Time for Bradley to blow the whistle.
REPORTER: Does the administration deny that that second strike happened, or did it happen and the administration denies that Hegseth gave the order?

LEAVITT: The latter. Secretary Hegseth authorized Admiral Bradley to conduct these kinetic strikes. He worked well within his authority and the law.
