The only way journalism works is when it’s independent from the power it’s supposed to hold to account, which means ownership can’t have anything to do with those in power

Ms. Weiss had raised numerous concerns to “60 Minutes” producers about Ms. Alfonsi’s segment on Friday and Saturday, and she asked for a significant amount of new material to be added, according to three people familiar with the internal discussions. One of Ms. Weiss’s suggestions was to include an interview with Stephen Miller, a White House deputy chief of staff and the architect of Mr. Trump’s immigration crackdown, or a similarly high-ranking Trump administration official, two of the people said. Ms. Weiss provided contact information for Mr. Miller to the “60 Minutes” staff. Ms. Weiss also questioned the use of the term “migrants” to describe the Venezuelan men who were deported, noting that they were in the United States illegally, two of the people said.

News Team, Thank you for the notes and texts. I apologize for not reaching out earlier. I learned on Saturday that Bari Weiss spiked our story, INSIDE CECOT, which was supposed to air tonight. We (Ori and I) asked for a call to discuss her decision. She did not afford us that courtesy/opportunity. Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices. It is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now-after every rigorous internal check has been met is not an editorial decision, it is a political one. We requested responses to questions and/or interviews with DHS, the White House, and the State Department. Government silence is a statement, not a VETO. Their refusal to be interviewed is a tactical maneuver designed to kill the story. If the administration's refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a "kill switch" for any reporting they find inconvenient. If the standard for airing a story becomes "the government must agree to be interviewed," then the government effectively gains control over the 60 Minutes broadcast. We go from an investigative powerhouse to a stenographer for the state. These men risked their lives to speak with us. We have a moral and professional obligation to the sources who entrusted us with their stories. Abandoning them now is a betrayal of the most basic tenet of journalism: giving voice to the voiceless. CBS spiked the Jeffrey Wigand interview due to legal concerns, nearly destroying the credibility of this broadcast. It took years to recover from that "low point." By pulling this story to shield an administration, we are repeating that history, but for political optics rather than legal ones. We have been promoting this story on social media for days. Our viewers are expecting it. When it fails to air without a credible explanation, the public will correctly identify this as corporate censorship. We are trading 50 years of "Gold Standard" reputation for a single week of political quiet. I care too much about this broadcast to watch it be dismantled without a fight. Sharyn

This is my linocut print with collaged Japanese washi papers of a procession of Kolędnicy, or Kolęda carollers through the woods to honour the sun at Winter Solstice. This print is inspired by Polish festivals but there are different versions of this across a wider region. Groups of carollers go singing from house to house with a homemade star on a pole held high and in several traditional costumes. This group in a boy in long coat holding a colourful star lantern on a pole, a devil, a turón, a bear and a crane. In Polish folklore, the Turoń, which is the black, horned and shaggy animal with a flopping jaw is common at folk events including Kolęda, in times of Carnival and before Lent begins. The name comes from the word tur, meaning aurochs, an extinct ancestor of modern cattle. Carolling with the star on a pole was called “gwiazdory." Each print is 9.25" by 12.5" on Japanese washi paper with collaged paper for colours.

It is utterly catastrophic that RFK Jr. plans to end CDC recommendations for most childhood vaccines.

It’s a betrayal of science, ethics, compassion, and the people of the United States.

And it was also a specific goal of Project 2025 (page 254).

The Guardian set up 24 new, blank accounts on Facebook and Instagram. They gave generic male names and set the age at 24. And all they did was watch the feeds. No relationships. No posting. No replies. No likes. No clicking on ads. NOTHING.

The feeds turned hideously misogynistic within weeks.

The remarkably well-preserved York Helmet, dated AD 770-775, is one of only six surviving helmets from Anglo-Saxon Britain. A Latin inscription bears the name ‘Oshere’. Discovered by a digger operator in York in 1982. Iron and copper-alloy.

My photo shows a front view of the so-called York Helmet on display at the Yorkshire Museum in York. This Anglian helmet is composed of four main elements; a composite cap (brown in colour), two hinged cheek-pieces (also brown in colour) and a brass neckguard made of ring mail ( dark in my photo). A brass-coloured nose guard is decorated with intricate interlaced animals. The 'eyebrows' have animal-head terminals. An inscribed copper alloy band runs over and across the crest of the helmet. The interlacing animals on the nose guard have open lips, comma-shaped eyes and spiral hips. Between the ‘eyebrows' and facing downward, is a larger animal head with a rounded snout and comma-shaped eyes, like those on the nose guard. This animal has ears on either side of its head that merge with the inscribed copper alloy band. A Latin inscription on the band reads: 'IN. NOMINE. DNI. NOSTRI. IHV. SCS. SPS. D. ET. OMNIBUS. DECEMUS. AMEN. OSHERE. XPI.' This abbreviated Latin inscription may be translated as 'In the name of our Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit, God and with all we pray. Amen. Oshere. Christ.' Oshere was probably a member of the powerful ruling dynasty of the kingdom of Northumbria. The helmet was heavily worn and had been repaired when for reasons unknown, it was buried with care in a square wood-lined pit, perhaps for safeguarding and later retrieval at a time when York was occupied by Vikings. But it lay unrecovered for around a thousand years, until it was discovered by a digger operator in 1982.

Remarkable to see the typical Late Roman/Byzantine features - large almond shaped eyes and flowing locks of hair - rendered in glass. 🏺

Tall translucent intense cobalt blue 'head flask', facing towards the camera. The head portrays a youth with long hair arranged in wavy locks at the back, reaching to the nape of the neck and behind the ears, with a fringe of straight locks on his forehead. The head has prominent ears, almond-shaped eyes with inset pupils, and a protruding, thick upper lip, pointed nose, and small chin. The hairstyle and large eyes are typical of Late Roman/Byzantine portraiture. The head forms the body of the vessel, with a tall flared neck and rim emerging from the top. A single handle attached at the back - the top is attached halfway up the neck, and the bottom (which has ridges) attaches to the back of the head, running down to the bottom, which is a round tiered base. #FindsFriday: A 'dragonesque' brooch from the British Museum. Its belly is inlaid with coloured enamel, and the pin (missing) would have fitted on the back between the two necks. These wonderfully sinuous brooches were popular in the decades after the Roman invasion.

The S-shaped metal brooch is thickest in the middle, where blue and yellow enamel has been delicately inserted in chequered and swirling patterns. The terminals look like cute dragon heads, with upright ears, round eyes and an upturned snout. It's about 5cm long.
