I've always wondered if the discussion around these games reflects the quality of the work or the fact that I happened to write lot about them. It's really a core insecurity I have the games that I've worked on. Would they speak without this critical framing (the designer diaries, etc)? 🧵
the fact that we dont talk about games like arcs and root when talking about artistic/thematic/political expression in tabletop games points to a fundamental weakness of rpg-centered games discourse

And they fired him over a bribe.
I've spent a lot of time thinking about this fascinating exchange Colbert had with Dua Lipa, when she asked him about the role his faith plays in his comedy.

The series is a million books long and there are many sub-series that follow different groups of characters (as you can tell by the commander decks mocked up). I would read Small Gods. It stands alone, and gives you a peek into the world.

Blind prediction before #EdgeofEternities #mtg previews start: the mechanical focus will be the exile zone (space/void/unknown), Robot/Mutant/Alien (featured in FIN & DFT) typal & artifacts (Robots, gizmos and Vehicle spaceships), sinergizing with DFT.

It might be tempting for us as game designers to think that games' rules "constrain" gameplay, or that gameplay "enacts" the game's rules, but I really think it's the opposite.

A game's rules wait inert for you to reach out, in the moment of gameplay, and choose to bring them to bear.

Mechanics of 5e don't reinforce its heroic fantasy, one of the issues Draw Steel aims to solve. So I ask thee @mattcolville.bsky.social : what if a TTRPG was built bottom-up from those same D&D 5e mechanics?
What would that look like? Is that even a productive exercise?

RPG tip from the archive: Make quick legendary creatures with three legendary resistances and three legendary actions per round with their most appropriate single attack and a non-provoking move.

mmm ok real thoughts here, bc still in field. Farming simulator *without* colonialism. No Taming The Wilds nonsense. No Vikings (sorry Actual Norse, y'all cool, but your fans...).

Nature isn't an adversary, but the cold indifference is antagonistic still. So how do you gamify that?

Here's a fun idea: make your own Pawn!

What's a Pawn? Little guys I made up for my fantasy setting of Narcoscir. They're puppets powered by spirit-bound weapons.

How to make one:
-Metal head
-Puppet body
-Spirit-bound weapon (doesn't have to be a sword)
-Big cloak (optional)
-Have fun!
