I will say again, Nostalgia is the Devil's Word when it comes to media, especially games. Like that word barely means what it's supposed to mean at this point and it's damaging our ability to communicate about the history of games.

TL;DR, design as product engineering and design as artistic analysis have been conflated for video games from the start, and almost all written, formal game design theory is really the former, which is why game designers interested in artistic expression all hate it

I think what is true is that like, a lot of gamers that 10-15 years ago would have had Irate Gamer brain and called things "dogshit" now have Video Essayist brain and call things "bad design"

Love Tara rightfully boiling over this lol. It's so funny that this was something people brought up constantly when the game came out as GOOD design, but as years go on, games train people more and more to NOT actively engage with and respond to what they're experiencing.
I'm watching a vid on Silksong and they're saying Dark Souls 1 had a 'bad' opening section (firelink) because, while there are multiple paths, there's only one you can fully pursue. Thus the others are 'fake' and it's a 'guess' as to whether you have a 'good' or 'awful' time...
