I didn't take pics but the feeling of being in a group of people with no visible beginning or end was so thrilling. The opposite of online anomie, and a living counterpoint to the wary, isolated, compartmentalized world the shitheads want to make. It's simple and obvious I guess but it means a lot.
Sorry to be corny but the aerial shots of these crowds are almost indescribably moving and hopeful

It's not Trump who normalizes autocracy. It's the rest of American news media. The Guardian can and should stand apart as the one outlet unafraid to declare autocracy is here. Stop asking. Declare.
Has Trump succeeded in normalising American autocracy?

I think Democrats should offer voters a broadly defined anti-fraud platform. Yes, obviously, start with Trump’s influence peddling, but don’t stop there. Online fraud is massive, almost every phone call you get is a scam, and the solution has to be federal or it just won’t work.

They should have a separate Internet that you have to pass a sort of civil service certification exam to post on. Everybody else can look at youtube for kids with comments disabled.

Democrats will often look at something that doesn’t poll well and think “oh no, better move away from that!” but they’re getting their role backwards. parties influence public opinion. if you’re purely reactive, you’re just letting the GOP frame every debate.
the lesson of the election isn’t “we should give up on trans rights,” it’s that the GOP took an issue that negatively impacted almost no one and made it a headliner. why would it help to surrender on an issue if they can create a grievance from thin air?

My sister sent me this, it’s from an interview I did with her at UCB in 2019 while she was running for president. She was real and human and warm and funny. We talked backstage for about an hour, mostly about cooking. Loved her then, love her now, and she’ll make a great President.
