It has become received wisdom in Brussels and Washington that there is a new “euro-sclerosis”: that the EU economy is lagging the US

This view is wrong

A little primer on the measurement of productivity – and why reports of the economic death of Europe are greatly exaggerated🧵

Nobel Prizes by country and year.

The dominance of Germany is striking every time. Before 1933, that is. And the utter dominance of America (and the UK) after 1945.

According to this @zdfde.bsky.social Politbarometer poll, 76% of Germans are in favour of more defence spending with new debt.

This includes 90% of CDU voters, 52% of Die Linke voters and even 70% of FDP voters.

A fiscal public opinion revolution.

The American National Election Study has been fielded at every US presidential election since 1948 and has led the world in the study of elections. The political withdrawal of funding for it would be destructive and a dangerous signal regarding the future of survey research in America.
🚨 The ANES is on the list, because the award description includes the study of 'racial conflict.'
The loss of the ANES would be a huge loss for public opinion, and for science.

As someone trained as a trade economist, it is my duty to share the 1929-1933 Kindleberger Spiral, showing the month-month decline in global trade due to the combined factors of the (global) Great Depression and retaliatory tariffs. Smooth Hawley is implemented mid-June 1930.

I knew that we were in trouble when USAID cancelled all of our projects last week. But I never guessed we'd end up here, with a purge of its senior leadership, the suspension of all programming (that millions rely on) and the shuttering of its website, in about 10 days time. Dark times.

The @yougov.co.uk German political team are launching our first MRP model of the 2025 German Bundestag election later this week.

We'll be making detailed calls for every constituency, estimating regional list vote shares, and projecting how the parliament would shape up.

*And* it’s the sum of all single digit numbers cubed:

1³+2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³ = 2025

💕 pure mathematical joy 💕
Happy 2025 = 45², the first “square” year since 1936, the next being 2116. Its digit sum is also a square: 2+0+2+5 = 9 = 3². This last happened in 1681 and next occurs in 2304. And not since 900 has the year divided by the digit sum been a square too: 900/9=100 = 10² & 2025/9=225 = 15² QED. 👀🎉😁
