As hard as it is to say, the work we do to activate and build community today is not meant for our benefit, but for the generations after us. The good things we had in our lifetimes were gifted by previous generations that worked for it, knowing they wouldn't be the immediate benefactors

oldhead advice from an oldhead.

every couple years, newcomers to the movement think "THIS is finally it, the moment when the dam breaks and the whole system is overthrown"

and when it doesn't happen they lose patience and get disillusioned and drop out of movement work

gotta build for long term

Everything happening now has a precedent. This is not new. Please understand that everything happening now is very American. The only change is that it is happening on camera to middle income white people. Ask BIPOC and low income white people about abuses by the state.

I've added "WHY AREN'T AMERICANS DOING ANYTHING!" and its variations to my Reasons to Block, and it's giving me peace*. As a statement, it's wildly ignorant, inaccurate, and adds absolutely nothing of value. Highly recommend.

This is why it annoys me when people try to make it seem as if this is how things have always been. There was a time when greater literacy and reading as a part of everyday life for people of every class was a national mission. Then it changed drastically and now we’re here.
Last fall I ended up looking at a lot of Seventeen magazines for a project. Even in the late 90's, there was a section of book recs in every issue. One of them was historical fiction about the life of Van Gogh, doorstop-thick. It hit me then how much of a reading culture we've lost.

Let's talk about generative AI, contaminated information, and rhubarb.

Once upon a time, Europe was at war.

Food was scarce, and the government of the quote-unquote United Kingdom looked for alternatives. 1/

Whew.

Europe didn’t need lessons in hate.
I would like to talk a little bit about the experience of living in the Roman ghetto in Renaissance Europe for you guys. Just to give a sense of why the idea that Nazis learned from the US is so offensive. A thread of uncertain length.

To start, the Roman ghetto was deeply overcrowded swampland.

7°F (-14°C) this morning. Driver-side door wouldn't open, frozen shut. Was worried I'd break the handle. But I was able to get in on the passenger side and push it open.

When Rob Reiner was on his all-time epic run at the start of his career, he had an opportunity to read a script that was looking for a production partner, and he lost his mind for it. He decided Castle Rock had to have it, no matter what.

No, Jews around the world don't suffer because of the actions of the government of Israel. Jews around the world suffer because antisemites use the actions of the government of Israel to justify attacks on Jews. And if you make the same association, you're also an antisemite.

We need a 4-day, 32-hour work week with livable wages.

There is no reason that people need to be working this much.

People need time off to rest and spend with family and friends.

About a decade ago I went back to finish my degree. One of the students attending the local Community College right out of high school had a mother who decided to give College a shot, too. Not content to merely be on the same campus, she enrolled in all the same classes as her kid.
