Start with job growth: Measures from ADP, Revelio, LinkedIn, etc., all tell subtly different stories, but they mostly agree on the big picture. After slowing dramatically over the summer, private-sector job growth has remained weak, but it hasn't necessarily slowed much further.

Since late 2024, wages at the bottom have been growing more slowly than those at the top. That’s a reversal of a nearly decades-long trend of higher growth at the bottom.

Now that summer is over, Chicago is still on track to have fewer homicides in 2025 than almost any other year since 2001. This is especially impressive considering that the five most violent years of the 21st century have all been in the past decade.

Importantly, though, long-term unemployment (joblessness of more than 6 months) has been rising quite substantially. That suggests it's gotten a lot harder to find a job if you need one, which is consistent with what we've been hearing anecdotally.

Health care and social assistance is carrying the job market right now.

HCSA vs. all other industries:
July: +73.3k vs. -0.3k
June: +59k vs. -45k
May: +72k vs. -53k

Not great for jobs growth to be so thin, mostly supported by 1 sector
