these days as I'm once again struggling to find any foothold in any fighting game, I find it helpful to treat the old idea of the online FGC as a Former Thing that has now split into at least two classifications: the battered wasteland of animated skeletons, and the Esports Ghoul Empire

"display kids" is perhaps the most unhinged dipswitch setting in arcade history
wildweasel486.bsky.social
Some inappropriately creepy golf content - Sente Mini Golf (1986) has DIP switches that add photos of missing children to the attract mode (and to enable a "LOCATED" message per kid). These profiles were replaced with new ones in updated ROMs.

Modern operators seem to leave them on, a lot. 😨
A Reddit post from r/creepygaming by user SuperCamouflageShark - I saw these missing child reports on the attract mode of a Sente Mini-Golf arcade machine recently.

The photo is of a Sente Mini Golf machine, displaying black-and-white photographs of missing children: Tahj Allen Merriman, and Steven Phillip Curtis. Their profiles are filled out in red text. Another photograph of a different Sente Mini Golf machine, displaying the same photos of missing children. Sente Mini Golf running under MAME, with the DIP Switches menu showing. DIP switches 3, 4, and 5 configure whether the missing children are displayed in the attract mode, with switches 4 and 5 showing or hiding a "LOCATED" stamp over the respective kid's photo. Screenshot of Sente Mini Golf running under MAME; this screen shows two different missing children: Malinda Marie Smith and April Rose Yates. For the sake of demonstration I have enabled the "LOCATED" flag on the kid on the right. (DISCLAIMER: I do not have any information on whether April was located or not. This is strictly a demonstration and is not intended as documentation of a real event.)

It's said that history is written by the victor and that's why this type of AI is reserved exclusively for losers who suck at everything

I thought something seemed off about the the image posted below: it's a photo that's been edited and colorized by AI. Please don't do that.

Learned that I am being laid off from Heart Machine, and will be leaving the studio later this month.

Do you need a contractor? I've got a track record of leading scope-friendly script revisions late in dev. I have also done a lot of consulting on new IPs and pitches/demos. Feel free to DM me!

The answer to why no one seems to be making new Deus Ex or whatevs is pretty much entirely that: they are, but then some guy with money goes "but that doesn't look like the game that sold well this year!" and shoots it with a shotgun

All the classic Legendary games were pre-venture capital in games

surely that's not *also* an "ongoing war zone" where photographs were taken in action

if you've always felt a little "different", but never taken the time to figure out exactly HOW you're different, now's the time. whether it's a formal diagnosis (if you feel safe getting one) or talking with other neurodivergent friends, figure out what you need to feel "normal" & implement it Now

and eddie kingston could and has cut a promo on a cookie. on sour patch kids. coulda just let him rip over the phone every week while he was injured and he would've done it without thinking. never lost that. always had it. if you ain't listening to these legends talk then what are you watchin bro

The real secret to AEWs success is that it's actually a promo territory. Yeah, the wrestling is insanely good, but that's not why buys & viewers are up. Hangamn & Toni Storm, specifically, are so good on the mic that everyone else has to reach their level or they won't get over as main eventers.

"who cares about achievements anyway" is the most barely tangentially related discourse you could necro in the wake of current events but. so be it. you have uttered The Words and now I shall sound the horn that reawakens the Gamer Librarians

As the #1 Achievements Scholar, I have big thoughts on this that I think might be important for game devs to hear. I spent last quarter analyzing the scene and have found that gamers don't just love achievements, they love You. It's the longest lasting connection point between player and game
keano.bsky.social
mandatory platform-dictated achievement systems are bad, costing the industry millions in €€€ and we should just toss it in a bin as an 00s experiment
