Important update: I have received word from insiders that Crunchyroll executives have deemed the user backlash to be small enough that their subtitle enshittification & OOONA plans will NOT be cancelled, only delayed.

I have added an update to the article. There's a summary at the top now too.

Crunchyroll is destroying its subtitles for no good reason

A ton of research and effort went into this one. This is the article to read to get to the bottom of Crunchyroll's subtitle changes!

With the Fall 2025 anime season, Crunchyroll demonstrates zero respect for anime as a medium as the presentation quality of its subtitles reach an all-time low.

Don't think I've ever bothered to look up what USS in ship names means, but apparently it's just short for United States Ship. Anyway, I'm making this post because I believe the Finnish Navy should change it's boring Finnish Navy Ship (FNS) identification to just Finnish Ship, shortened to FISH
oh yeah what *does* the USS stand for in star trek? is there a united states still?

A smaller update on this: Back catalog subtitles might actually be safe, but new questions arise as to why exactly is Crunchyroll pursuing this plan at all, as the cost-cutting potential looks even more questionable now. Could this just be table setting for further quality-reducing cost-cutting?

This is *amazing*. This goes straight to Deceptive Design Hall of Shame.

They made a "take a break" nudge that has no obvious "ok, I'll take a break" affordance. Its three affordances are:

1) Keep chatting (default, highlighted)
2) x out — keeps chatting
3) "This was helpful" — what is this?

🧵
One of the changes that OpenAI has made to make ChatGPT safer is a "take a break" nudge. There's something quite interesting about the design here. Which thing does it make you want to click?

In Blazblue, the character Platinum the Trinity has a jab where they do either rock, paper or scissors

This makes no difference in almost all situations EXCEPT when they are fighting another Platinum. If they both jab each other at the same time, the "winner" gets the hit

The location ID on twitter revealing that 99% of the horrible shit on that website is just posted by people in India honestly soothed me a lot. Its literally all just fake.

this point really hits the nail on the head of why localization workers are so frustrated by “AI” loc companies.
freelancers have to beg for a single dollar wage increase, while tens of millions are dumped into a machine designed to replace them.
the machine doesn’t even work. freelancers do.
one of the things that makes me most mad about genAI (and there are many) is we've been told there's not enough money for hiring. but there's billions poured into ai.

so not enough money to hire workers. but infinite money to pour into technology whose goal is never having to pay workers again.

In The Labyrinth of Time, entering the Ziggurat without a lantern is supposed to show a black screen. However, the developers put in the wrong filename for the black screen, so it fails to render, showing a black screen instead

I used to fansub anime because I was let down by the state of official digital distribution. I wasn't expecting to make a career out of it (though I'd have loved to) so I was studying gamedev, but then a job opportunity to get into meaningful manga digital distribution came along and I jumped on it
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

Saw this extremely baffling post on another site and apparently, some people's exposure to the term "senpai" has been so skewed that they primarily think of it as a porn/sexual term.

My position of "English discourse should not adapt Japanese terms untranslated" has been vindicated once again.

the literal beat for beat events of the ending of Final Fantasy XIII are entirely impossible to understand or even speculate on without the context of a lore video released in a 2011 press conference
After "film trilogy that dropped a critical plot point exclusively via timed Fortnite event" and "video game series whose story only makes sense if you're aware of the events of a canon pachinko machine", I feel like there are whole frontiers of user-hostile narrative design waiting to be explored.

Just finished sending out a lot of mails to various news sites that cover anime and have talked about Crunchyroll('s subtitle issues) before. Hopefully this will actually lead to some articles down the line... I'll probably try to contact anitubers next. Anything to spread the word at this point tbh

Huh, it doesn't seem to be possible to search for replies to someone on here. The to: filter is just an alias for the mentions: filter, which only gives you results for explicit handle mentions like @bsky.app and does not include replies. Kinda weird to not be able to find replies with a to: filter!
