What can history teach us about what happens when a populist strongman with an idiosyncratic taste for low interest rates undermines central bank independence?

This is precisely how you should respond to a bullshit investigation.

Attempting to criminalize the actions of an independent public servant, Fed Chair Jay Powell, for the sin of acting independently is an outrage. It's bad economics, bad politics, bad for the rule of law, bad for the public sector, bad for American credibility and bad for Americans.

Important to watch. The move against Powell is a move against the dollar, the US economy, sound economics, the rule of law and America’s standing in the world. It is a disaster. As markets will show soon.
Jerome Powell: "This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation."

There are many ways of course Congress could limit or regulate ICE. For example, a law could require approval of the mayor or local authorities for any deployment of ICE or CBP to any community.

This is blatantly illegal. A president can’t go into the oil business and then decide where to spend the money. We are completely untethered from our founding document with a lawless president and a Republican Congress which has abdicated all Constitutional authority.

If Trump&Co facilitate a transition to democracy, the mil op will go down as a major achievement. But cut deals with Maduro lackeys just to secure oil access & it will go down as a grotesque return to 19th/20th-century colonialism and interventionism. My latest:
The U.S. Priority in Venezuela Must Be Democracy, Not Oil
Long-term evaluations of the success or failure of the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela will be determined by what happens next.

So Trump has:
-illegally abducted Maduro, which the neocons love, because they want the opposition to take over
-but then left his VP, who fully supports him, in charge
-but said she would follow his orders
-but then she didn't
-and now the Venezuelan opposition is also condemning Trump

Almost 20 years ago, I warned we were heading toward a world where states invade each other at will, and that America had an obligation to restore the higher bar for going to war. Not gonna say I told ya so, but...well, okay, I will.

There's a reason I chose these quotes to open the book.

Let me be explicit. If you hear anyone say replacing fossil fuels with renewables is going to be expensive, they're either misinformed, uninformed, or lying to you.
Even leaving out the massive economic costs of #climate changes caused by burning fossil fuels, #renewables are cheaper now.

Trump: "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed"

Right, of course! That’s why they erase our towns from the map, bomb our infrastructure and businesses. To force us to rebuild everything and succeed. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Trump: "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. It sounds a little strange but President Putin was very generous in his feeling toward Ukraine succeeding, including supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices."

For those who actually care about evidence-based city-making, there’s a ton of evidence that decongestion pricing has been a massive success in New York City, by every measure of success, and many ways that can’t be measured.
Year 1 data on congestion pricing in Manhattan…

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.
