If calling a state secret police agent a murderer for committing murder will lead to more murder by the state secret police, it sure seems like the problem is with the secret police
Homan: "We gotta stop the hateful rhetoric. Saying this officer is a murderer is dangerous. It's just ridiculous. It's gonna infuriate people more which means there's gonna be more incidents like this."

~<Every single institution> we have is counter-majoritarian:

- A hyper-gerrymanded House

- A hyper-malapportioned Senate with staggered elections

- FPTP SMDs in a continent-wide country with our urban/rural population distribution

- The EC

Stop it. We need <checks on counter-majoritarianism>

Chief Justice John Roberts touted the independence of the federal judiciary as a “counter-majoritarian check” and urged Americans rattled by partisan politics to keep faith with the Constitution. https://cnn.it/3LsloyF

Did this work when Neville Chamberlain tried it?
Hegseth: "We must start by recognizing that returning to Ukraine's pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective ... the US does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement."

Fascinating paper. "In eight of the twelve cases under study, inequality was trending downward in the years before the elections that brought to power leaders who moved against democracy."

“if she’d just done X she would have won”

no

I have plenty of critiques of the campaign but ultimately the entire god damn country just went right by five points at least, everywhere, despite whatever you call Trump’s campaign

none of us know how she could have won and that’s the problem

This from Jill Filipovic sums it up for me:

"In the coming days there's gonna be a lot of opining about what the Harris campaign did wrong, but this election was not an indictment of Kamala Harris. It was an indictment of America."

A horrifying and vital read.

End capital punishment. It is cruel and unusual, never humane, racially imposed, and doesn’t even act as the deterrent it’s supposed to be.

Also, this article is yet another demonstration of the vital role of local, independent journalism.
NEW: As executions speed up nationwide, Alabama is experimenting with using nitrogen gas. It just did the 2nd such execution, ever.

The state insists this is "more humane."

But our reporter Lauren Gill witnessed it, & saw that it went catastrophically. boltsmag.org/alabama-nitr...
“Agony” and “Suffering” as Alabama Experiments with Nitrogen Executions
The state said Alan Miller’s execution by lethal gas would be “more humane.” He writhed and gasped for air in his final moments.

3>>>>4>5>2>>1 in terms of practicality and time it takes to fix the problem
Reminder that there are five ways to address the current SCOTUS problem.

1. Impeach some justices
2. Impose term limits
3. Expand the courts
4. Pass legislation limiting court prerogatives
5. Keep winning the presidency for the next 16 years or so while periodically also holding the senate.
