In 2022, Ken Sim said line item budget comparisons were the cornerstone of his budget policy if he got elected mayor.

In 2025, he voted against it happening for a budget presentation with potentially $100 million in cuts because his newly appointed city manager told him no.

If you're 40+ and you don't ride your bike around town what even is your plan for healthy aging?

I just don't understand older people who hate bike lanes.

Oh, you drive a car? Make sure you don't drive drunk or use your phone while you drive!

Saying this every time someone mentions driving would make more sense than bringing up helmets whenever someone mentions biking.

Outdoor, open air court, of course

One of the surprise hits with our group of American healthcare workers considering moving to #VancouverIsland are these informal "Ask Your Questions" sessions we do 2-3x/week now.

We've had a US doctor who now lives in Victoria, a #Nanaimo immigration consultant, and tonight a Vancouver nurse.

New episode up! We talked with researcher Tim Gill about how we need to make our cities safe for children, not cars. "Children are basically living very captive and kind of contained lives, and that's just not healthy."

To the people who lent their credibility to this panel: are you having fun yet?

It might be time to resign while you can still salvage some of it.

At tonight’s “consultation”…

When a high school kid tried to raise concerns about the teachers strike, Bruce McAllister cut the kids mic and then suggested his parents should have beaten him more.

Listen to the clip yourself…

It’s…

Telling.

I have to say in all my years as a journalist, I've never heard a government employee say that a youth should be assaulted for speaking their mind.

People act like getting kids places without a car is Herculean. I biked three (one not mine) to the Kingfield Farmers Market, 95% on bikeways. No car seats, no stress, just laughs. The challenge isn’t moving kids, it’s redesigning cities to work for people instead of cars. #StreetsForPeople
View from the front of a cargo bike riding on a new two-way protected bikeway. Ahead, three children, all wearing helmets, ride bikes — one in a yellow sweatshirt, one in black, and one in a patterned dress. A pedestrian walks on the sidewalk to the left. Apartment buildings line one side of the street, and parked cars line the other. Trees and bright morning sunlight frame the neighborhood scene.

Back home from soccer. Kiddo opted to ride with mum on HSD, just for fun.

My semi-regular reminder of a really important reality about cities, density, services and taxes.

Original graphic cleaned up by @kathrynmathias.bsky.social. #CityMakingMath
Venn diagram with stable services, low density, and low taxes. The area in the centre said “Does Not Exist.” And it’s correct.

More evidence that biking is really good for you:

After reviewing 23 studies, researchers concluded that there a "positive association between cycling and cognition" in adults 45+.

The proper minimum density for cities is:

"Whatever can guarantee that you can walk back from the bike shop"

I think a lot of people's anger and anxieties could be calmed by more face to face time with nature, away from the rat race and sterilized grind.

Imagine if we made that easier to do.

"Montréal is often hailed as the most “biking-friendly” city in North America. But our research has found that only 2.3 per cent of the city’s roadways are allocated to bike infrastructure, with car infrastructure occupying the remaining 97.7 per cent of road space." #yycbike
Montréal’s bike infrastructure hardly takes up any space from cars on city roads
Bike infrastructure in Montréal takes up less than three per cent of the roadway, while car infrastructure has more than 90 per cent of roads across the city.
