From my notifications it seems like this is a common problem, which has a solution. If you’re not familiar with JustWatch.com, it’s a brilliant little site (and app) that tells you where a given movie or TV series is streaming, and from experience is at least accurate for Australia.

This is an exceptional essay which I think everyone could do with reading, critic or not. A reminder of how to appreciate art even if you don’t like it.
The paragraph about TV Tropes is spot on. I can't bear that approach to criticism where the main aim seems to be asserting superiority to the work. People who'll identify an influence and be like "Ah, rumbled!" episodes.ghost.io/art-criticis...
You are not smarter than the art you critique
Here's my best advice for young critics: Don't presume you know better.

it is almost Christmas which means it’s Muppet Christmas Carol season and that, in turn, means it is time to revisit this delightful interview with Michael Caine, who loves everything about that movie even more than you do
Michael Caine Loves 'The Muppet Christmas Carol' as Much as You Do
God bless us, every one! But especially Michael Caine.

I think the funniest thing to me is that the people who are working to create an Artificial General Intelligence is that it’s a bunch of libertarians who have never realised that what makes us smart as humans is community, society, empathy. The things they find an anathema.

It's been, uh, a while, but I have a new newsletter out, based on some conversations here, about the irreconcilable experiences of LLMs that different groups have had and how that all boils down to afordances and how 'AI' is a terrible name and an even worse UX metaphor.
"AI" is bad UX

We made a mistake by calling the output of AI ‘slop’. In academia it is now looking much more like toxic pollution, on the verge of laying waste to previously fertile plains. Suing for royalties is only a small part of the battle.

I'm sharing this here, as I have on Facebook and Instagram, but there's no account on here to share from, and I just think this is wonderful.

A really good balance of design and implementation, and appears to achieve everything it set out to do, and it *SO* appeals to my inner 'work nerd'.

Meta’s “Trusted Experts” helped me run scam ads on Facebook and Instagram
A Reuters reporter created ads promising unrealistic investment returns and easily placed them on Meta's social media platforms.

Once, when I worked in the bookshop, i was asked for a book with the “fancy writing that monks do” in it. When i pressed the woman for more information (such as a title) she informed me that she had seen the book in a dream, and woke up before she could find out the title.

I think a lot about how Harlan Ellison said in an interview that Agatha Christie’s work would be forgotten five minutes after her death, and (by implication) his work would live on, and nearly the opposite has occurred. I’m not even sneering at Ellison. Just how we don’t understand posterity.

This is a little baffling. We lost computer literacy in, what, less than one generation?

Like Prometheus watching humans forget how to make fire in real time.

The older I get, the more I realize how much we lose to technology's ability to "simplify," to abstraction and ultimately, obfuscation.
