One Star Review of Waiting for Godot on Broadway
I recently attended Waiting for Godot on Broadway and spent over $1,400 for two Row C seats (103 and 104). I'm a longtime admirer of Broadway productions and even hold a season pass for Shea's Performing Arts Theatre, so I came in with genuine enthusiasm and high expectations. Unfortunately, this show was unlike anything ! have ever experienced —and not in a good way.
What I encountered was not the artistry, music, or emotional storytelling I usually associate with Broadway, but instead what felt like an endless cycle of nonsensical conversation between characters who seemed trapped in their own madness. I tried-truly tried-to find meaning, symbolism, or even a thread of emotional resonance. I stayed through the first half hoping the second would offer clarity. But by intermission, it was clear: this was a waste of both time and money.
Keanu Reeves is an actor I respect greatly, but I cannot fathom why he would agree to participate in such a disjointed, inaccessible production. His talent was lost in a performance that defied reason rather than provoked insight.
To anyone considering attending: unless you are drawn to highly abstract, nearly incomprehensible theater, I strongly caution you against this show. For the average, educated, thoughtful theatergoer, it is far more frustrating than fulfilling. In my opinion, this was the single most disappointing Broadway experience I've ever had - an unfortunate waste of money and, more importantly, of time.

Het Trojaanse paard in deze ontwikkeling is wellicht de espressomachine geweest. De Italiaanse koffiecultuur heeft een even eenvoudige als voor de hand liggende filosofie: thuis zet je snel even een kopje koffie op het fornuis met een gedeukt mokkapotje , en voor de goede, professionele espresso met crema of melkschuim ga je vervolgens één of een paar keer per dag naar een bar. Daar staat een grote machine die vakkundig wordt bediend, maar staan ook andere mensen met wie je een praatje kunt maken. Daar zijn kranten, daar vind je inspiratie, daar speelt het leven zich af. Geen Italiaan zou uit zichzelf op het idee komen om het ‘Un caffè, per favore!’ in te ruilen voor het slokje koffie thuis en zichzelf dit ritueel te ontnemen. Het zijn gewoon verschillende dingen!

Toch is dat precies wat er bij ons is gebeurd. In onze woonkeukens staan overal verchroomde espressobolides te glimmen, die behoorlijk wat kennis, training en onderhoud vragen. Maar is je espresso nu echt zo goed als bij de Italiaan?

Misschien, maar bij de Italiaan smaakt hij nog altijd uitstekend, kost hij twee euro en voorziet hij de mensen niet enkel van cafeïne. Met al die semiprofessionele barista’s, zuurdesemfanaten en smoothie-experts is het geen wonder dat steden op een gegeven moment geen echte concentratie van winkels, horeca en dienstverleners meer hebben en dat ooit levendige wijken in slaapgebieden veranderen. ‘Stad’ betekende altijd ook: eropuit gaan en andere mensen ontmoeten. De afgelopen jaren horen we veel over de vereenzaming in onze westerse samenleving. Sommige oorzaken daarvan hebben we misschien zelf in huis gehaald.
