“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

There was absolutely *no* reason for the news to look the way it did last week, especially on the BBC of all places, beyond the fact that a large swathe of the media (particularly the upper echelons) have been captured by the Twitter machine and have substituted the 'map' for the territory.
Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for his attempted military coup in Brazil, but you didn't hear much about it in the news because the people who did the exact same thing in the States dominated the media crying hysterically over a podcaster. None of this was inevitable.

Not one government has mirrored its X accounts on Bluesky, let alone moving over and leaving Musk's hate sewer. How long do we have to wait? Which country is going to make the first move? The EU could be a catalyst but only when a national government moves will all the attendant institutions follow.

The media across the spectrum did a bad job of context last weekend, by reporting aspirations of a massive wave of protests as a fact.

The earlier prediction that the injunction to empty the hotel would see protests grow proved wrong.

We don't know if the new verdict will. Don't assume, do report

Arresting 400+ people for the "terrorist" offence of protesting against mass murder while large segments of the right are openly encouraging riots against immigrants is a tale of a very unhappy country and government.

Despite the high praise received for the atmosphere Palace fans twice created at Wembley with their displays this year. In another example of football culture crushing, Wembley Stadium has just put the kaibosh on our Community Sheild display.

Another cost is the psychological price paid by submitting to Trump. It destroys your credibility, helps the far-right narrative that strongmen are superior to democracy, creates a precedent to keep giving in and makes you look weak in the new might-is-right international order that is emerging.

This OBR chart (using OECD data) debunks two pervasive myths:

a) UK pensions are pitifully low compared to other European countries.

b) The "triple lock" has done its work of boosting UK pensions so can now be abandoned.

Fuck off.

This governance-by-opinion-poll has to end. Stop asking people's opinions about stuff we don't have the tools to understand and do the damn work you've been elected for.

Multiple ships sailed. European orgs/govts could have set up Mastodon instances. They chose not to. They could post here. They chose not to. They’ve normalised posting in the social media equivalent of 4chan. I can’t see anything changing.

The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world.
They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

It might help your sanity if you recognise that economic policy has nothing to do with actual economics. It's about placating old (often dead) voters by appealing to a fictional world wherein our comparative advantage is still in industries that no longer really exist.

One of the sources of rot running through our political, intellectual, and media institutions is the total triumph of the idea that democracy means outsourcing your morality and point of view to a fuzzily incoherent view of what's popular. Total rejection of the idea of morality as personal virtue.
How is this different than what Republican senators say about Trump
