the thing that always gets me about this story is: it’s the early 80s. What kind of prep and commitment do you need to put in to be able to sing Hitler Youth songs? How would you go about it?

This is the cycle that fuels populist. It perpetuate policy failure while encouraging a narrative of scapegoating. The prime minister came to power promising to address it. Instead he now supports it.

@teamlabouruk.bsky.social has got itself into a proper mess with this. Another screeching u turn in the making.
Labour's Stella Creasy asks Shabana Mahmood if she will "incarcerate children with their families as part of enforced return, or whether she intends to separate children from their mums and dads"?

Mahmood says she won't separate children, but doesn't say if they will be incarcerated

One of the most shameful incidents of WW2 was when the government and press scapegoated refugees, then decided to pack them off an a cramped ship, The HMT DUNERA and ship them to Australia.

As they boarded the boat they were stripped of the valuables and robbed by the guards.

Now government policy

Blue Labour’s takeover of the party has made it into a cruel, racist horrorshow.

Starmer, Mahmood and the rest must go now before Labour become completely unelectable.
Asked a question by Kuenssberg about whether her proposals on refugees would mean refugee families being broken up, Shabana Mahmood immediately started talking about illegal migration. Eventually, she’s admitted that yes, Labour’s policy will break up settled families. Vile.

Interesting to see so many great British patriots right now begging an American president to bankrupt one of Britain’s last remaining truly national institutions.

Super weird decision. It’s not just that “some people feel unsafe” in a vague sense. The convention center is government owned, so trans people could be arrested for using the bathroom. So of course they don’t attend, and important technical meetings don’t happen.
I’m disappointed the CNCF keeps picking deep red states for #KubeCon. It’s unsafe for so many community members. Why not Canada or Mexico?

(Next 2 in North America are Salt Lake City again and New Orleans)

At some point, for the love of God, will someone ANYONE at long last take the council funding crisis seriously?!?

Because THIS is what will break down a society, not some poor soul escaping incredible dangers, arriving on our shores.

I wonder how this will play for Farage. Trump is very unpopular here; the BBC much loved.

I’ve written to Keir Starmer, Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage urging them to condemn Donald Trump’s attack on the BBC.

The BBC belongs to Britain, not Trump. We must defend it together.

Performing desirable behaviour and "virtue signalling" is also absolutely core to human society.

It's why we tell kids that stealing is wrong, rather than just that it's illegal and punishable by law.

Living in a place where people only treat each other well when forced to by rules would be AWFUL.
Performative decency is actually *so* important for this reason.

It tricks the 10% of ghouls into thinking that there are only 1% of ghouls.

And it makes the 30% of people that don't care one way or another follow the mostly decent crowd

I don’t think it’s inappropriate to have some news stories about migration issues but it is very odd indeed for BBC 6 Music, a station essentially targeted at hipster leftie middle-aged people, to be majoring on asylum seeker stories as much as it does.
*Again* the top story on BBC 6 music is about immigration

How is Shabana Mahmood wanting to introduce a ‘Danish style’ system for refugees the top story this morning?!?

The obsession of 6 Music news on immigration and asylum is frankly bizarre
