Occurs to me that on this date last year, I ran my first marathon. This year, I’m just getting back from WFC.

Genuinely hard to say which was more tiring.

(And for some mad reason I chose the con to break in brand new DMs. So the state of my feet is *definitely* on a par)

Finally on my way back from World Fantasy Con. First ever con, incredible experience. Lovely to meet so many people! (And I discovered that my social battery badly needs an upgrade, next time I’ll bring a power bank… or pace myself 😅)

Burning the candle at both ends (and the middle) as I take in more panels than my tiny brain can handle at @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social but it’s also release day for this lovely anthology featuring my debut short story ‘And In The Firelight I Will Find You’ 🦀🐴🎃 HAPPY HALLOWEEN
🎃 ThE hArVeSt BeGiNs! 🎃 It's release day for HARVEST THE NIGHT: AN ANTHOLOGY OF FOLK HORROR edited by C.M. Muller. My story "The Darkness Inside Her" features strange moss, a forest nap, and too many mouths. Check it out! chthonicmatter.wordpress.com

I won’t be home for Halloween as I’ll be at WFC, but you better believe I still got my (tiny, eensy-weensy) pumpkin carving in. 🎃

Quite the Friday night vibe making my @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social spreadsheet planner. Colour coded and everything. It’s like being back at school… except, y’know, with enthusiasm.

The lesson of genAI has very little to do with genAI.

The real lesson here is that as soon as your bosses found something that could approximate the worst possible worker in your team, they obliterated entry-level jobs.

It's not coming alive. That's nonsensical. But your bosses are already alive.

Perhaps spare a thought for the many, many people on Bluesky who are being subjected to unimaginable violence every day in Gaza, begging for help on your platform, only to be systematically silenced and deleted repeatedly by your moderation team.
Violence is always unacceptable, and threats of violence have no place in public discourse. Our thoughts are with Charlie Kirk and his family.

Two trials will be repeated endlessly despite always producing the same results:

1) Does UBI work? (yes)
2) Does AI improve productivity? (no)
M365 Copilot fails to up productivity in UK government trial
: AI tech shows promise writing emails or summarizing meetings. Don't bother with anything more complex

It can take years to write a story, several more to sell it, and then several more for it to be published. And once it is published, there’s sadly no guarantee the story will find its readers. So if you’re writing stories, you better make sure you’re writing stories that you enjoy.

In a disclaimer that is relatively evergreen:

For anyone monitoring my google activity this morning, I’d just like to clarify I’m a writer.

If a human told you things that were correct 80% of the time but claimed, flat out, with absolute confidence, that they were correct 100% of the time, you would dislike them & never trust a word they say. All I'm really suggesting is for people to treat chatbots with that same distrust & antagonism.

Chris Eubank Jr once walked into my cafe and asked me for a tuna baguette. It wasn’t on the menu, my colleague found that fact so hilarious that she started laughing.

I watched confusion shift to indignation shift to fury in the middleweight champion boxer’s eyes as they bore into mine.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

I’ve got a joke about Icarus but it doesn’t tend to land very well.
I've got a joke about Narcissus, it's brilliant. Honestly, I don't think anyone has ever made a joke this good.
I've got a joke about Cassandra, you won't believe it.

Good news on this front! Seattle Worldcon will be refunding me my full membership.

If you also applied to be a panelist and are pulling out of the con due to the genAI situation, contact their Registration team and cite the violations to the Privacy Policy in your request for a refund.
I've just sent an email to Seattle Worldcon about all this, but I wanted to highlight this for everyone else:

Their own Privacy Policy does NOT give them permission to share your personal data (even "just" your name) with genAI seattlein2025.org/about/privac...
