Hello, I'm Phoenix (he/him)! I'm a queer, trans, neurodivergent, and disabled writer currently working on my first novel, and this is my account for posting about writing and books in general (though it will probably not be limited to just that)!

It's Native American Heritage Month! To my Native Creatives who will be flooded with last minute requests from non-Native orgs for speaking opportunities, double....TRIPLE your rates. They had all year to think and plan about what they were going to do for Native American Heritage month.

Since NaNoWriMo is ruined now, I suggest we do OctoWriMo, a month where we teach an octopus to write a novel and eventually it rises up and rules over all of us.

Reminder as they send out their "Get excited!" emails that NaNoWriMo has fully embraced AI, is sponsored by an AI editing software, and in fact has declared it "ableist and classist" to be against AI.
NaNoWriMo: The goal is to just write a little everyday! Don't worry about it being good, just write your heart out!

Also NaNoWriMo: Or just type "WHAT IF MAN WITH BIG GUN SAVED SIX BOOBED ALIEN? + 50,000 WORDS" and hit generate. Want to buy a finisher t-shirt?

Accessibility is important. Don’t use URLS or hashtags; screenreaders will spit out gobbledygook. If you for whatever reason are unable to provide alt text, you can use the hashtag alt4me and a volunteer will write it for you.

At least doing that goes a long way. Don’t get caught careless.
Hey new peeps, one of the big differences on bsky is that alt text is not only highly encouraged, many users will not boost img posts without it. Just do the best you can and know that custom feeds also pick up keywords in alt text. No need to use # in the alt text. It also makes you hotter

NYPD dep. commish says he “found a book on terrorism” at Columbia. From the Oxford UP website, the book answers the questions, “What is terrorism? Is it war? Is democracy especially vulnerable to terrorist attacks? What can we do to stop it?”

This is how you seed a genocide-justifying moral panic.

The entire point of a protest is to disrupt regular activities. That's the reason protests are effective - because that disruption forces people to pay attention to whatever they're protesting for. Without that, it's not a protest.

I think the hardest thing for most writers to come to terms with is that there's no One Secret Trick That Will Get You a Book Deal.

If there was one, publishing would look very different.

(Or maybe very the same.)

You just gotta keep trucking.

the thing about "are audiobooks reading" discourse is they tend to assign moral value to the concept of reading, which is not an activity that actually magically makes you a good person. the reason that we teach children that reading is good is because it is a skill not because it's a moral value

Being a trans author is fucking weird right now. Hell is actively unfolding all around us but I still need to be like, "hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book? It won't make anything better, but it's kinda fun?"

So....hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book?

Audiobooks are one of the most lovely parts of living in the future. They are both a personal delight and an important part of how I regulate my emotions.
Audiobooks are good. If that’s how people can best engage with books, leave them the fuck alone and let them do it. The willingness to engage with the book is the key factor, and there are lots of folks for whom physical reading does not work or work as well.
I don’t know about this audio book discourse.

I have one kid with a severe visual processing disorder who has always relied on them, and actually has a great sense of literature and another who was a voracious reader before long covid and audiobooks has been life savers for both.
