the invasion of Afghanistan is among the most horrific recent chapters of the long history of elite impunity in the US. this coda is grim but fitting - the govt practically explicitly affirming that it should only be Afghans who live with the consequences amid fading public memory of the atrocity
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

What was the big difference between those two time frames? 🧐
“The CDC said in its 2024 report—which compared data from two time periods, 2011-2013 and 2020-2022—that stroke prevalence had risen nationally by almost 8%. But among people aged 18 to 44, the prevalence of stroke increased by almost 15%”

I know times are hard for everyone but consider helping Harry if you can spare the money?
Harry Connolly (@byharryconnolly.bsky.social) is one of my fave authors.

He needs $ help. harryjconnolly.com/17553-2/

For a good binge read, grab his completed epic fantasy trilogy The Great Way.

His "A Key, an Egg, an Unfortunate Remark" is the best standalone urban fantasy I've read.

I've been clean from heroin for almost 30 years and even I would be a better HHS head than RFK ffs

Addiction doesn't make you a bad person, it just means shit happened and you dealt with it. You know... like humans do.
I am a little tired of being yelled at for this but apparently not tired about: heroin addiction is not RFK’s problem. He’s a sociopath. Most addicts aren’t. Honestly, walk into an NA meeting, grab the first person with a few years to be head of HHS and they’d probably do a better job than Bobby.
This is what happens when you put a privileged, 14 year heroin addict in charge of health. Duh

I'm pulling this post out, but a lot of folks need to sit with Skyla's thread.
You claim to care about poor and disabled people on fixed incomes and that's why YOU need to pirate?

I beg of you, as a poor person who is alive because she can WFH while taking immunosuppressants: get my name out of your mouth. Poor and disabled people make a living creating art--support it.

I mean I have been enraged about this topic for a while, but I had also never actually figured out how they calculate the poverty line.

I am legitimately speechless.
We have a “poverty trap” and it’s driving the destruction of social cohesion.

The “poverty line” is’t 35,000, it’s $150,000, and making more than one, and less than the other is worse than being “poor”.

Which is why the rage.

People really need to get their heads around the difference between saying something in public and saying something for public comment

I'd say "you know better than to do this at coffee shops" but the number of live updates of strangers' conversations we've seen over the years
"Don't post if you don't want random strangers to reply" remains one of the most most hilariously illogical things I have seen people say on social media.

Allow me to list several other examples of "Do not allow me to perceive a thing if I cannot personally interact with it" logic at play:

three people buying a book we didn't really have on our radar at my old bookstore was instant "order more, face it out, somebody on staff read it and write a talker for it" territory
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

If you want literature to exist you have to support it and that doesn't always mean you, personally, will pay. The more we USE our libraries the better they can justify their funding, and the more people they can serve.

By stealing instead, you're cheating your neighbors AND the artists. Dick.

I haven't driven a car in 7 years. Because where I live prioritizes people. Transit is convenient, reliable, frequent, and goes basically everywhere. Walking is safe, traffic is calmed/slow, and bike lanes protected.
And for the rare need for a car, I have taxi options.
I wish everyone had this.
I am super-pro-public transit, and use it way more than the average American, but I live near a light rail station with very, very stable and predictable scheduling, and even then I would not use it for many things I use a car for because the cost of transit is time.
i wonder how much of Americans' views on driving vs. transit would change if they had to pay for gas/insurance/etc every time they turned on the engine

"i'm not paying $5 to take the train to work twice a day when i can just drive" is a genuine opinion held by so many people
