Absolutely right.

AI might be able to summarize (poorly) what we currently know, but a major goal of historical research is to find the hidden surprises out there.

Let me illustrate …
Not a historian but like to research. The AI might summarize what I'm looking for, but it doesn't find what I'm *not* looking for. The book on the shelf next to the one I wanted. The insight in chapter 6 based on the quote I needed from chapter 4.

One thing about climate change: it disproves the capitalist ideology that poor people's suffering is their own fault.

Billionaires emit as much in a day as the world's 4 billion poorest emit in a yr, yet those 4 billion humans suffer most from climate impacts.

This is inequality, and it is evil.

This thoughtful thread deserves a read from everyone.
A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

Your periodic reminder that climate change means levels of migration will increase sharply in the coming years and we either find an effective and humane way to manage that or we invite ever more chaos and suffering.

Great explainer by someone who actually knows how this stuff works
These policies, where they aren't just reiterating ones which already exist in a differently worded form, are just plain idiotic.
They show not only a complete disregard for people's lives, or basic humanity, but also reality. 1/

We don't need to "protect our borders"

Our biggest threat doesn't need to cross a border to harm us.

From a yacht, billionaires can move markets, pressure govs, dodge taxes & bankroll politicians to rewrite our laws.

The threat isn't the "outsider"

It's the concentrated power already inside.

Are we ready to govern? Absolutely. After Labour, the Conservatives and now Reform, people deserve something genuinely different — something positive, hopeful and truly transformative.

Back the Greens and let’s build a country that works for people and planet! 💚

I am not a lawyer, just a historian, but one fundamental problem with the political debate about the EU, especially in English publications is that the whole principle of the acquis communnitaire is not understood or taken seriously. The EU is a framework of rules, not an alliance.

This is a super helpful account. Small reminders that are easy to absorb and make a big difference to a lot of people.
Use icons, symbols, terms, and design patterns that are already familiar to users. People with cognitive disabilities benefit from common behavior and design patterns. An example is the standard convention for hyperlinks (underlined and blue for unvisited; purple for visited).

Benefit facts:

Benefits are not the drain media tells us they are

Benefits barely - or don’t - cover the cost of living & don’t permit savings so everything received gets spent

And everything that’s spent benefits the private sector

And everything that is spent in the private sector gets taxed!

Why are patients waiting in corridors outside A&Es? Because patients can’t be moved out of A&Es to beds. Because the Tories and LibDems drastically cut the numbers of beds.

The bed numbers need to be restored + the staff to manage the beds.

Labour needs to properly fund and properly staff our NHS.
