If you're considering following me, bear in mind that I'm a social butterfly, both in research (as a bioinformatician), and on social media. If there's news I want to spread, I'll repost a woman's report of it (if possible). "Like" means I like something, and have read it.

This is why the constant exhortations for the left to just be a bit nicer to the poor right wingers rings so hollow. Tory Whanau rightfully calls out some bullshit, Mike Hosking says she's being bitchy. These people are only happy when people are completely cowed

This is what happens when you don’t lead on ZB’s terms. Amazing how fragile some talkback hosts get when a woman does well. So emotional!
Nick Mills: Tory Whanau - What a ride; What a disappointment
ON AIR
WELLINGTON

Well, one more day as Mayor for Tory Whanau - the
"accidental mayor," as many have called her - and just like that, her chapter in Wellington politics closes.
What a ride, and what a mess. And, let's be honest, what a disappointment.
From the very beginning, Tory framed her leadership through a lens of identity - "poor me, give me a break, I'm a woman, and I'm new. Mike's Minute: Tory Whanau is the poster child for ineptitude
ON AIR MIKE HOSKING BREAKFAST OPINION
Mike Hosking, Thu, 9 Oct 2025, 10:33am
The Wellington mayor went out, not really in a blaze of glory yesterday, but more a fireball of misery and bitchiness.
Tory Whanau is probably the local body poster child for ineptitude. She's given her bye-bye speech.
She was a shambles. She may still be back, as she is standing in the Mãori ward.

I know that, realistically, people are done masking here.

Not least cos the UK pretty much has a fucken moratorium on talking about COVID, masks, etc at the moment.

But if you can avoid spreading your seasonal germs of any kind, please do.

(Cos OMFGs I have enuf wrong with me already aarg 😭)

How about approaching this from the other side- how do we incentivise employers to make the adjustments necessary to help people with disabilities into work. Rather than suggesting that if sick people just tried a bit harder they could not be sick, which is what this looks like

Here are 3 ideas to make Parliament reflect Aotearoa better:
1. Hang a copy of Te Tiriti in the debating chamber as a reminder of what is at our foundation.
2. Create space for haka to be performed in the debating chamber.
2. Allow haka from the public gallery with permission.

two bits that really stood out

- how the replies to Jay show some of the more aggressive negative replies are still visible, while measured criticisms are hidden

I noticed that myself but didn't quite put my finger on how nefarious that is

I’m trying to watch Djokovic objectively but it’s truly off-putting to see him push himself to this ghastly physical limit for what seems like a pretty trivial reason (in the context of his goaty career). It’s like watching someone on a hunger strike to protest the new Tron Movie or something 🎾

Truly don't know how I did that because it was a word analysis on Othello, and you actually have to do some legwork for that to know where all exactly the word you picked was used (and there weren't a ton of online study guides at that point to help)

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.
wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.

GOOD NEWS ALERT 🚨

Today the government relented to pressure from the @livingwageaotearoa.bsky.social and retained the requirement for contracted workers to be paid at least the Living Wage rate in Government Contracts. Around 5,000 workers will likely benefit from this decision

How vaping primes the lungs for COVID-19 damage

COVID-19 not only infects the airways but also damages blood vessels. Both COVID and vaping trigger inflammation—vaping irritates blood vessel linings while COVID floods lungs with inflammatory molecules, creating a “perfect storm.”

"the custom barcoded primer strategy offers a promising solution for influenza A.... 2.3X faster than the Native Barcoding Kit and only 15 minutes longer than the Rapid kit, it strikes an ideal balance between the speed of the Rapid kit and the high-quality results of the Native kit."
Comparison of time and cost of library preparation for Native, Rapid, and PCR sequencing runs on MinION flow cell. Library preparation time presented excludes RT-PCR amplification and amplicon purification. The cost presented excludes nucleic acid extraction, RT-PCR amplification, and flow cell. The current cost of R10.4.1 MinION flow cell ranges between $450 and $700 per flow cell depending on the purchased batch size, while the Flongle flow cell costs $810 per batch of 12 flow cells.

while fantastic news, and please get your booster if you can, even less severe illnesses can cause long covid and other (potentially fatal) complications. your best defense is a multilayered one, which includes a well fitting respirator in at least public indoor spaces.
