Finally left the bird site, but not before taking a final reminder of my warning from years ago:
My granny was a reliable, Depression-era, Democratic party voter all of her life. The only exception was for the Republican state representative who reliably brought turkeys to the senior center every Thanksgiving when their ss didn't go far. This matters, in addition to being good human behavior.
This year, Ms. Caroline, a beloved Senior in the #FightingFifth, called my office and shared with my team that she was terrified as the SNAP crisis began due to the Republican shutdown. When I got the message, I called Ms. Caroline back, and my family and I brought her the food she needed to get by.

Somebody send help. I woke up this morning to eat remainder beer cheese and crackers/ chocolate cookies from Christmas. I must take these leftovers to the DnD session lest I do this all the way to the New Year.

Unfortunately, tomorrow has arrived for me today.
“Your windows need scrubbing,” said Frog. “Your plants need watering.”

“Tomorrow!” cried Toad. “I will do it all tomorrow!”

Have you listened to a two year-old belt "Defying Gravity" loudly and off-key because she loves her toy microphone so much? You really should, because it is pure joy.

Haha, Earl Hess was one of my undergraduate professors. Every military class I ever took was with him. Occasionally, someone would wander in thinking that they wanted to take military history. Only the history majors ever made it more than one round with him - logistics, logistics, logistics.
90% of military history is about where the latrines are dug. You cannot make war if you have dysentery.

Well. I've likely just ensured my husband's early demise, as this fudge isn't setting, and God knows he's going to come in here and eat the entire thing with a spoon on the pretense that I'm not serving it to guests anymore.

(No time to reheat and reset - gotta have that pan for other things).

And so it has passed that I have taken on the mantel of preparing the Christmas meal for the maternal side of my family. It's a strange realization that it is now me coordinating the family eating & being together. Not my grandmother, though she is still here. Me, in her house, four generations.

So you’re telling me that when your country welcomes talented people from around the globe, and brings them together in world-class universities, they make discoveries that save lives? Interesting.

"In particular, they persuaded HHS to renew scientists on term-limited appointments who were to be laid off."

This is likely untrue.

The major switches about renewals came after media exposure. That includes myself. It also includes the 12+ neuroscience PIs at NINDS.

I will also note I have heard from sources outside NIH, including in Congress, who feel like the renewals are not due to Memoli and/or Bhattacharya 'persuading' anyone -- but instead due to public attention and pressure.

The surest way you can ensure that people will hunt information out is to tell them they can't read/see it.

We once spent an hour in strategic planning being held hostage over the Oxford comma.
No one who has ever witnessed a single faculty meeting could ever again claim that college professors are part of some sort of coordinated conspiracy to accomplish anything, let alone turn the entire US into a Marxist utopia/dystopia with an assist from their great pals in corporate boardrooms.

The full requirements will end tourism in the United States.

We did Thanksgiving with just the immediate family due to an aunt's heart attack, grandmother's health & my own family coming down with plague. Pulled dinner together for us... then sat in a chair in which the back gave out, I fell head over heels, and my butt is gonna be blue tomorrow...
