america *refuses* to give up slavery
Assigned to a prison job paying $0.13 per hour, Abron Arrington refused to work, figuring his time could be better spent learning physics.

The Colorado DOC punished him with bouts of solitary confinement.
Forced Labor Continues in Colorado, Years After Vote to End Prison Slavery
Coloradans voted in 2018 to amend their state constitution to ban forced labor in prison. Years later, incarcerated people are still being punished for refusing work assignments.

New York City went 12 days without a murder in November / December. That's tied for the longest stretch in history, according to the NYPD. As someone who was here when there were 6+ murders per day in this town, it continues to amaze me how safe the place is.

Sean Duffy, the U.S. transportation secretary, has been urging people for the past week to dress and comport themselves better as a way of restoring “civility” to air travel. On Tuesday, he added another item to his list of concerns: the quality of the snacks handed out on commercial flights.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy Wants Healthier In-Flight Snack Options
Sean Duffy, who has been promoting greater decorum among air travelers, said he would like to see choices besides salty pretzels and buttery cookies.

Once again, the main day of Tea Party protests had about 300,000 nationwide, but saw endless coverage.

The No Kings protests had about 7,000,000 nationwide, and many media outlets reacted with a yawn.

No Kings was nearly 25x as big as the Tea Party but the Tea Party got 25x the attention.
Ask yourself this: How would the New York Times have covered the protests if it had been seven million MAGA supporters flooding the streets? We don’t even have to guess: We know how they and other mainstream outlets covered the Tea Party protests during Obama’s first term.

I really do think Ezra Klein needs to be held to account for why he gets to keep his columnist job, as a white man, for saying CK was "practicing politics the right way" while Karen Attiah, a Black woman, loses her columnist job for quoting what CK said about Black women.

Someone, plz ask him.

There were more than 120 domestic terrorist attacks, in which there were 11 murders, in the United States during the “relative calm” of the 1980s and 1990s. They just all happened to be at abortion clinics, so I guess those don’t count.

The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.

A few random headlines from the last 24 hours are a reminder that the system of “law enforcement” only attempts to enforce *some* laws against *some* people. Being “tough on crime” always means ignoring crimes of the powerful while ruthlessly crushing vulnerable people and political targets.

The historical cognate for what is happening in the United States right now is the period known as the Redemption. And the restoration of Confederate iconography, just like when they were originally installed, is to signal to the nation the return of white power.
The Trump administration is on a pro-Confederacy roll, with two monuments brought back in 24 hours. The "Confederate Memorial," its name since its construction in 1914, will be reinstalled in Arlington Cemetery.

There are three kinds of people at the NYT: those who know Chris Rufo is in charge of editorial assignments and like it, those who are too dumb to know it, and those who know it but can’t say it. Those of us on the outside who know it… have zero obligation to prop them up. Zero.
Watching, day after day, as angry people complain about the New York Times's editorial strategy while sending an endless stream of traffic to the New York Times.

ICE just arrested Brad Lander, the NYC Comptroller and one of the leading candidates for Mayor, without grounds.

He was conducting routine immigration court work, escorting individuals from hearings.

He asked ICE for their warrant - well within his legal rights.

This is political intimidation.
Whoa! NYC mayoral candidate and current city Comptroller Brad Lander seemingly arrested at the NYC immigration court while attending to escort someone attending their hearing.
Lander just got detained by federal agents as he tried to escort a man out of the courtroom. Lander was taken in an elevator with masked agents, along with one member of his NYPD security detail.
