January 6th was the most dramatic part, but the real coup (and real treason) was in the fake electors scheme. The riot was only to create a sense of crisis, whereas the fake electors would directly nullify the election.
January 6 was like a much dumber version of Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch and yet a plurality of American voters were like, Yeah, let’s give that guy the nuke codes again. An absolutely world historical debacle of societal ignorance. I’ll never understand it.

My guess on the Venezuela stuff is that the speech was an attempt at a fakeout(remember the switcharoo with the b-2s on the Iran bombing op) and that we’ll all wake up Friday morning to the news that strikes have started.
But it’s trump, so who the hell knows.
Gah! I hate this shit

Everyone wants to make “sense” of things, but we are all currently hostage to an irrationalist epistemic environment. You might as well just read the entrails of a slaughtered goat to divine where events are headed.

Hello friends, I recently lost my health insurance + benefits & am currently looking at a bill of over $16,000 for which I cannot pay. This would not necessarily be an issue if I were not visually impaired and currently out of full time work, but I am humbly asking for assistance now. Any bit helps.

Here is a paragraph from the ICRC guidance on direct participation in hostilities, discussing an actually complex situation — the distinction between driving AMMO to the front lines and driving ammo to a port. Ammo. Not drugs. And only driving it to the front lines is DPH.

Given the justification was in part because they might communicate with someone, pete could ask Heinz-Wilhelm Eck and his XO what the law of armed conflict says about that, except oops, the allies shot them dead in 1945 after a trial
WaPo with reporting that Pete gave an explicit order to JSOC during the first strike post impact to immediately follow up in order to, and I quote, "kill them all"

If domestic law wants to insist on an absolute duty of obedience, then if your commander orders you to do a war crime you are in a situation where you cannot comply with all your legal obligations

(You should commit the offense of insubordination, in that situation. Not the war crime.)

So I'm pretty sure a three star knows that an order to strike alleged combatants who are hors de combat is facially illegal, in case anyone's still having any hangups on whether Bradley needs to be in the dock after this

This is identical to Russia invading Ukraine. Illegally invading a country for their resources and likely killing thousands—if not more—is immoral and should not be supported by anyone with any shred of moral conscience.

This is........contentious. Like, yes, there is absolutely a lot of continuity between the Roman Empire and the "Barbarian" successor states but that period of fragmentation was explicitly due to the Roman state losing its monopoly on violence and acceding to Foederati demands under duress.
The Visigoths for instance did not really /conquer/ half of Gaul and Iberia, they were /given it/ in a grant, and over time casually increased their domains with the all but explicit permission of the emperors. Rome did not fall, it privatised itself.

You have to be willing to walk away from these guys if they let you down, just as a matter of basic self respect. It's not a fandom. You're hiring them to do a job or not.
I liked the Platner ads too but I think there's a difference between "guy who had some bad reddit posts a decade ago" and "ex-Blackwater merc who still has a Nazi tattoo." Sucks bigtime that he's the only one taking positions and talking policy I like, but them's the breaks!

The weather is about to get colder. It's the time of year when middle aged men's thoughts turn once again towards WWII history. Preparing for the season by getting a translated copy of Leopold Trepper's 1975 memoir about his role orchestrating resistance networks in occupied France for the Soviets.

I like and respect Eric. This is not a dunk at all. The counterargument is that without the filibuster, Democrats could have passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. They also could have restored abortion rights after Dobbs and done other important things, and Biden might not have been as unpopular.
Ironically, Democrats can only fight against the Republican spending bills and hold the line because of... the filibuster. I wrote in 2024 that Democrats would realize that Manchin and Sinema were more correct than people realized.

You don’t actually have to both sides this. The Jewish community in the UK is not the Israeli government. You can just condemn the murder of two British Jews killed in their place of worship and you don’t have to say a single other thing.

Putting this as mildly as possible. Lew is incorrect as a matter of IHL/LOAC. All Children non-combatants count the same. For instance if you were targeting Hamas fighters and foresaw that doing so would kill children, it doesn’t matter if those children are related to those Hamas fighters (1/2)

I initially rejected the genocide charge, but now I don't. A thread on why I've changed my mind:
