me and the lads (gender neutral) on our way to enforce the will of the Bishop of Rome by any means necessary (we are going to Costco to get water bottles for border crossers and then we're going to find translators & community resources for them)

Frankly, most conservative Catholics are just right-wing evangelicals who like the aesthetic. They might not even formally change religions. They aren't THAT concerned about their spiritual condition.
irenicbro.bsky.social
Again there will not be a "schism". A bunch of Catholics will do what they've been dying to do anyway and just become evangelicals.

This shutdown is utterly unique in US political history in that it essentially stems entirely from the House majority's total inability to do anything but run in circles trying to satisfy the whims of an unstable, incompetent, self-obsessed president. It doesn't obey normal political rules.
snarkranger.bsky.social
Mike Johnson furiously backpedaling on the back pay thing is a pretty good indication that nobody in the GOP has the slightest clue how to deal with the shutdown.

Speaker Johnson appears to say furloughed federal workers should get back pay under 2019 law

"It has always been the case. It is tradition and I think it is statutory law that federal employees be paid. And that’s my position."

I genuinely think that most in the chain of command are terrified of another Kent State. That doesn't mean individual soldiers won't cause harm, but I still believe that the percentage of command staff willing to carry out orders to harm American civilians is likely small.

On the one hand, civ-mil relations are gonna be nuts for the rest of my life

On the other hand, encouraging that the military isn’t cowed at every level

Oregon National Guard Adjutant General, General Gronewold says if they are federalized, that he will advise the Title 10 commander to utilize National Guard Troops to PROTECT protesters at ICE facilities. This is the right answer.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
I would also appreciate if media sources covering these events would simply and plainly state the clear and obvious truth that these deployments violate federal law, which is something virtually none of them have done.
normative.bsky.social
It would be super cool if when they said this stuff, the interviewer pointed out that we don’t actually have to speculate. We have polling, and it says residents oppose these deployments by HUGE margins.

Rep. Riley Moore: "I think the actual residents of Washington DC are very happy with the outcome. And I think the actual residents of Chicago and our other great cities here in America would actually like to have safe streets and not people murdered every night."
jfloyd314.bsky.social
Chalk up another point for this administration being incapable of consolidating power. ICE in its current state is utterly unfit to operate a police state.
surcomplicated.bsky.social
My Lai was in part the result of abandoning personnel standards for military recruitment.

Calley, for example, was unfit to be a private and yet became a 2nd Lieutenant; he was barely able to read at all.

And ICE has if anything set its standards much, much lower than the military did in Vietnam.

I just read the My Lai wiki page and wish I hadn't. Fucking brutal.

Dolly Parton’s sister, Freida Parton, is asking for people to pray for her sister’s health.
Verified Facebook post by Freida Parton. The caption reads:

“Last night, I was up all night praying for my sister, Dolly. Many of you know she hasn’t been feeling her best lately. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been lead to ask all of the world that loves her to be prayer warriors and pray with me. She’s strong, she’s loved, and with all the prayers being lifted for her, I know in my heart she’s going to be just fine. Godspeed, my sissy Dolly. We all love you! ❤️”

Below the caption is a photo of Dolly Parton standing outdoors in front of lush green ivy, hands clasped in prayer, wearing a shiny silver outfit with lace-trimmed sleeves, her signature blonde hair styled in soft curls, looking upward serenely.

Henceforth the red robes will only be worn as an away kit when the Canadian Supreme Court is playing the US one.

Tragic news from Canada where the Canadian Supreme Court has gone from the official dress on the left to the one on the right
Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in bright red wooly gowns, with a beige trim. It looks sort of like a Santa robe The Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in black gowns with a bright white kravat, and two thin red vertical lines on the side of the robe

As an aside, we'd dang well better hope that either Trump lives out his term or the entire administration is removed from office wholesale, because unlike Trump, who is mostly in this for his own benefit, Vance actively listens to freaks like Yarvin and wants to implement their agenda.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
It continues to blow me away that Yarvin, a well-educated citizen of the most powerful nation in human history, is so hateful towards anyone who believes differently from him that he wants to cut off every source of his nation's power and turn it into a Pinochet-style failed state to own the libs.
surcomplicated.bsky.social
This is the actual core of it, where he manages some cogent thought. Yarvin understands that getting rid of liberalism requires completely unmaking our freedoms and consolidating an utterly lawless extralegal apparatus.

And he can see that this isn't happening anywhere near fast enough to succeed.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
These people don't even themselves believe that they're capable of consolidating power lol

People want antifascism to be both as broad as literally anyone who is against fascism and also a principally egalitarian movement with progressive goals and you just can’t have both. Many antifascists are despicable bigots whose bigotry is just still not fascism.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
The thing about Christianity is that what you get out is in direct proportion to what you put in. And some of these people want life-altering spiritual benefits while doing absolutely nothing to work for them.

I think we should establish an understanding in the United States that if you order the military to carry out a lethal strike against something that is not an imminent threat without congressional authorization, what you did was murder and the entire chain of command is guilty.

fwiw from my vantage point there’s a slice of Bluesky that is incandescently mad at Jay, a slightly larger slice of Bluesky that’s vaguely aware there’s drama, and like 85% of the pie that is totally unaware anything is going on

Also, Eastern Orthodoxy's authority claim is basically just that there was nothing particularly special about the See of Rome (at least relative to Constantinople). It still had a fully fleshed-out hierarchical structure that made additional schisms somewhat less likely.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
3. "The leaders of the other group are illegitimate" - which either falls apart on authority grounds (who put you in charge of determining legitimacy?) or because someone else does the same thing to you, or both.
