What has brought these norms into jeopardy is a few things: the ideological capture of the BBC, an appalling Supreme Court decision, and a very, very weak Government that is cheerfully embarking on its own quite deliberate attack on human rights norms for short term political gain.

But the newspaper coverage - and that of the BBC - ignores these basic facts in favour of 'enemies of the people' type coverage. And I can't pretend not to be very worried indeed about what this means for some very fragile norms, around human rights and the rule of law, in the UK.

What the GOP never realized is that once you embrace conspiracy theories, there are no limits. You don't get to say "this unfalsifiable belief is valid and true, but yours isn't." They embraced unreality and this is the result.

The structural break after which we were no longer a full democracy, when 5 Wizards In Robes decided they were a super-legislature & counting all the actual votes didn’t matter. The rest has been 25 years of commentary.
25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.
