While it sounds like he's criticizing the Iraq War on principle, he's wording is really chilling:

"Thousands of lives, and we don't even have it..."

He's complaining about the money and lost lives because we haven't taken POSSESSION of anything at the end of it. He still wants the imperialism.
Truly, one of the best moments of the 2016 GOP primaries was when Trump cooked Jeb and the entire Bush family

Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.
AI Is Inventing Academic Papers That Don't Exist -- And They're Being Cited in Real Journals
Academic articles from authors using large language model are creating an ecosystem of fake research that threatens human knowledge itself.

Of course Yglesias is upset that you don't use it.

looking for website inspiration 👀✨

what are your favorite personal dev portfolios/blogs (or websites of small dev/design agencies)? I'm not talking super whimsical (although they are great 🤩), but beautifully made, nice to look at and read, great typography, nice little extras... 😊

Is it political violence when students get killed after JD Vance and Trump call universities the enemy of the people? Or is that just "tragedy" while only the murder of far-right advocates of violence like Charlie Kirk qualifies for political recognition?

The way tech companies constantly do stuff that nobody asked for really tells you a lot about their bigger ideology. They tell themselves that you will like it over time. What they mean is you’ll learn to endure it, or you’ll give up. quality of UI is not actually anywhere on their radar
new iOS update is sleek and also defaults in Music to “you must want songs transition as they would on a dance floor.” so many people will wonder why they can’t just listen to an album. Apps > Music > Song Transitions > toggle off.

Because capitalism orients people toward profit rather than allowing us to pursue our interests freely, it inevitably separates humans from the creative act.

It’s hard to imagine a better metaphor for late-stage Silicon Valley: Pay us a cut to imagine the future for us. An industry completely devoid of new ideas asking users to gamble on what might happen next.

The media successfully convinced itself all the humorless scolds were on the left, and while we certainly have our share of them, oh, baby, is it not even CLOSE to how many there are on the right.

“You don't have to try every cookie on the holiday table,” wrote Mehmet Oz in an email to all Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services employees.

I wrote about the Olivia Nuzzi saga and how it reflects the voyeurism and indignity that drives so much of our media—social and otherwise.

This is an essay about elite excess, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and the crisis of our democracy.

One of the reasons Trump has appeal amongst poor folk is that he is a poor person’s idea of a rich person.

The idea of becoming that rich person is engrained in American society. We have a TON of work to do before it is politically viable to tell people being that rich person isn’t possible
Wrote about the whole Strong Floor, No Ceiling thing, the pipe dream of American class consciousness, and the political salience of economic security:
