I remain convinced this is happening at all because our forebears who faced fascism in the mid 20th C. had all but died off, and we celebrated their heroism and sacrifice without talking about why it was absolutely necessary.
I cannot express this enough: If and when the tide turns away from fascism, you cannot mistake a ceasefire for peace. They never, ever want peace. You must persecute those responsible to the ends of the earth. You must make future generations fear a repeat of their fate.
