FWIW, the jury is still out on Gen AI being good at text summaries. Because it shortens & emphasizes text based on distribution, not meaning, it’s less of a summary (ie, salient points highlighted) than a compression (ie, the most frequently asserted terms in the distribution). Not the same thing!

it's not that the moral arc of the universe naturally bends towards justice, it's that the conditions that create and enable such evil do eventually cannibalize themselves, and in there, new opportunities arise. nothing is permanent, including these horrible pieces of shit.

NYC, PLEASE call your New York City Council member and DEMAND they vote to censure Vicky Paladino immediately.

Find your council member here: council.nyc.gov/districts/

Also, follow the @nycprogressives.bsky.social. They're on the job here.
A million Muslims live in New York City. We belong here, as does every other New Yorker.

This is vile Islamophobia from the Councilwoman and it has no place in our city.

*whispers* It's fine if you don't like calibri (I don't), but there are tons of other sans serif fonts out there. It's a disability rights issue and if you are a government agency you should be aware of that.

So, he's not just doing it to feel important and make his preferences the norm, he's actually doing it to hurt people. I apologize for saying it was "dumb bitch behavior." It's actually evil bitch behavior.
People absolutely care... the ones with low vision who can read Calibri font much more easily than Times New Roman.

This isn't just "oh, it's prettier" it's a deliberate jab at people with a particular disability.
This is such dumb bitch behavior. I'm sorry. Just say you think Times New Roman is prettier. It's a font. You don't have to lie. No one cares. (I like Century Gothic.)

The first school to market itself as AI free is going to corner the market on people interested in actually learning. And I would not be surprised if rich families and the children of people creating this tech were the first movers.
My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.

I love this take because institutions that feel dysfunctional for users are most likely agonizing for the workers who keep it running.

It's completely backwards and insane. Zohran will protect American Jews; the fascists will target American Jews.

Please take time this coming week to send an email or postcard of appreciation for your library to your superintendent, school board/city council, county commissioners court- or to librarians themselves!
