The Benoit Blanc trilogy might end up as one of the best artistic statements on the diseased conservatism of our era, and l think Wake Up Dead Man is my favorite of the trilogy, largely because it’s Rian Johnson trying to understand Christianity and its adherents more than having a definitive take.

One of my favorite Douglas Adams quotes:

“All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others.”

More timely today than ever, don't you think? 💙

And let's be SUPER clear here:

Those two people could have been Russian Navy sailors whose warship had just sunk an American aircraft carrier and it would STILL be a war crime to kill them when they were hanging on to the wreckage of their sunken ship.
a lot of words, none of them denying that Hegseth gave an order to kill helpless people who were stranded at sea after he blew up their boats

Tom Stoppard. One of the great writers. An epic wordsmith whose craft was such that one only compares themselves to him aspirationally. ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. BRAZIL. EMPIRE OF THE SUN. BILLY BATHGATE. ANNA KARENINA. Stage, screen, print. A genius. Rest in peace.
Goodbye to the master.

In the course of doing research and preparing my scholarly article I discovered that another Historian I read (who published back in 1980) was wrong and didn't have the full picture. It's humbling to realize that even experts don't know everything and we're all still learning and growing.

HAMNET is powerful, emotionally-draining, haunting, and has an unforgettable ending. Chloe Zhao imbues this one with an ethereal energy that makes it feel completely different from a typical Hollywood melodrama. Paul Mescal is excellent. And Jessie Buckley, wow. May very well be the best in the biz.

Come and See deserves credit for disproving the "Clean Wehrmacht" myth. At the same time, the influence of Soviet censors is clear. It toes the Party line by emphasizing the influence of Fascists/Nazis, in accordance with the Soviet narrative that they (not regular Germans) were the enemy.

More than inspiration, writing a book requires discipline.

There are days I feel highly driven, only to get nowhere. Similarly, there are mornings I feel off, yet end up making massive leaps.

If you want progress, don’t trust your feelings.

Trust discipline ✍️

People who pirate books: “I just think art and literature should be FREE to everyone!”

Yes, I too would love to live in a world where art is accessible freely to all and yet artists are paid a living wage, but as this magical wagical pixie wixie land does not exist, please don’t steal from us.
