Some flavour of neurodivergent. Some flavour of queer. Not normal about LotR, Leverage, Doctor Who, SPN. Cat person. She/her. [Banner is a pretty sunset over grassland. Avi is selfie of a white woman with short, salt and pepper hair, and Doctor Who shirt.

Reached Jingo in my guards reread and would like it not to be chiming quite so clearly with the times we're in, please.

A Discworld message for the rest of us, this Party Conference season
Josh Kirby's illustration of Terry Pratchett's Discworld: Great A'Tuin the star turtle, floating through space with 4 elephants on his back, that are in turn supporting the flat, disc-shaped Discworld

Caption reads:
Read Discworld.
Because cunts are still running this one.

Me: Is there something I could do differently to improve my sleep?

Doctor: I recommend not looking at your phone for at least an hour before bed.

Me: So nothing then.

Sound up 📢

Brilliant bit on consent by Brit mum using tea as an analogy.

It's funny but gets the point across.

Always, always get enthusiastic, willing consent, or sex is not consensual.

An interesting way to get the meaning of consent across

Maybe they look bored and moody because they’re fed up of having their expressions policed. Maybe they’re thinking about the state of the world and the condition of womanhood in the 21stC. Maybe they’re thinking are thinking about having a fish finger sandwich for dinner. Either way…

Have seen two instances of people feeling the need to ask why women in a public space look “bored” and “moody”.

Genuine Q (not being a dickhead!): is that 'factoid' in it's original sense of being 'not true' or in the Steve Wright sense of 'a short fact'?

we need to bring back the Horrible Histories primary school trick where you describe in detail something done by the nazis, get the audience to agree that it's abhorrent, then reveal that it was actually 'our lads' last week

I actually think it might be interesting to ask some of these flag-shagging freaks to give an account of the First World War as they understand it. Because increasingly it seems to me they don't. 'Lest we forget' has gone from an urgent moral injunction to a smug piety.
robertgalbraith.bsky.social
At this he became very uncomfortable, I think because he was actually being invited to *think* about the War rather than use it as an excuse for soft, smug 'lest we forget' sentimentality. So he spluttered 'WELL ANYWAY TRUMP WON SO THERE' and slunk off.

Pretty sky this evening.
Above a dark playing field and a silhouetted treeline, the sky is pale gold and pale blue with a croissant-shaped band of cloud pressing in. The cloud goes from dark grey to apricot where the setting sun catches it. Dark leaves encroach into the frame on the left.

I'd probably have died before I was 30 in the 19th Century, let alone in medieval times. For all the horrors of modern life, am grateful to have been born into these days not the old ones.
garius.bsky.social
When you could code silly quizzes on Facebook, it was FULL of "what would you be in medieval times?!" etc.

I made one that nearly always answered "died as a child", "died in childbirth", "lived and died as a servant"

People got SUPER mad with it.

Everyone assumes they'll be at the top of the tree

The subtext of ‘we should be more like Dubai’, beyond the obvious racism, is ‘I should have a servant’.

Still a bit disappointed they didn't use this cover
A mocked up cover for the new Ann Cleeves novel titled The Killing Stones. It features Orkney Library & Archive's balls on the cover.

I can feel the chill coming off Vetinari across the multiverse at the small error in the antepenultimate paragraph... The aristos try to replace the patrician *with* a monarch, not replace the monarchy (which, as all Discworld fans know, ran into Stoneface Vimes's axe a long time ago). Otherwise A+.

It’s a "crisis" when immigrants "take jobs away", but "innovation" when machines do. Funny.

Highland cattle are famous for their ability to "disco nap". Normally these brief, efficient sleeps will last between three and twenty minutes, deploying a variety of objects as pillows, including moorland boulders, cars or any particularly large dog or sheep who happens to be nearby.
