I don't understand how we are still stigmatizing people for wearing masks during respiratory virus season in 2025. Really, people?

Knives out: the upper middle class are squabbling vicious children who do not deserve their inheritance

Glass onion: the new elite are the stupidest murderous cunts alive and deserve your scorn

Wake up dead man: those preaching anger as salvation are leading you to death, hope and kindness matter

My Auntie Mary died today. She was a proud, private woman who bore the weight of her illness with grace and dignity. We knew the end was near but we didn’t know it was this near. I am bereft. 💔

I miss the days before covid, when in New York, in Times Square or a crowded subway, you would sometimes see people wearing masks and think, "Why are they wearing those? Oh, right--it's none of my fucking business." Let's get back to that.
Jon Stewart and the pod saves guys mocking people who wear masks while talking about What Is To Be Done is exactly what Jon Stewart and the pod saves guys are, it's the most Jon Stewart and pod saves guys thing possible.

America's richest 10% now hold 60% of the nation's wealth.

The bottom half of America? It holds just 6%.

Wealth inequality is eating this country alive.

God this.
will also add - yes, this is my personal crusade - that turning podcasts into videos implicitly asks women to once again make more effort than men, as the bar for "camera-ready" for one gender is obviously higher than for the other
‘Painful to hear!’ How podcasts’ rush to video is turning them into dreadful listens

It’s pretty wild that the most rabidly anti-immigrant administration in recent memory is comprised of a President married to an immigrant, a VP married to the daughter of immigrants, an assistant AG in charge of Civil Rights who’s an immigrant (Dhillon), & it was all funded by an immigrant (Musk).

Absolutely right.

AI might be able to summarize (poorly) what we currently know, but a major goal of historical research is to find the hidden surprises out there.

Let me illustrate …
Not a historian but like to research. The AI might summarize what I'm looking for, but it doesn't find what I'm *not* looking for. The book on the shelf next to the one I wanted. The insight in chapter 6 based on the quote I needed from chapter 4.

anyway I am just rambling now but I really don’t feel like I’ve ever seen my own messy, fractious, complicated relationship with Catholicism depicted onscreen with this much nuance, skipping over any kind of simplistic “Church = Good” or “Church = Bad.” church just brings out what’s already there

Hoooly shit, just finally watched WAKE UP DEAD MAN and I am losing my mind! Bravo @rianjohnson.bsky.social. It both defied and exceeded my expectations, if that is even possible. A film utterly full to bursting with grace. And, yknow, a fun whodunnit too. 10/10

I think it's important not to misunderstand what these social media platforms are. They are not public arenas where we bravely take on reactionary forces in honorable combat. They are apps that expose you to stress and thereby simulate the feeling of having done something useful

One of the ways you can see this is driven by an industry looking for some way to make itself profitable? No one has shown any concern that students demonstrate basic competency with computers before enrolling (or graduating)—and, many do lack that.
It’s been fun while it lasted: “Purdue University will begin requiring that all of its undergraduate students demonstrate basic competency in artificial intelligence starting with freshmen who enter the university in 2026.”

I've said something to this extent before but text messaging, and especially read receipts, are the forebear of this problem

We should not expect even our closest loved ones to be accessible and responsive all hours of day and night, and we should not get upset if they don't answer right away
Anyway, I think everyone on social is still influenced by a set of late-aughts/early-'10s premises that may have been well-intentioned (we'll bring the whole world together!) but in practice are sociopathic/insane (we'll give you a direct line to anyone in the world and they HAVE to talk to you!)

A word is dead

When it is said,

Some say.

I say it just

Begins to live

That day.

Yes, if you're always hysterical, if you have one glib answer for everything ("He has dementia," "He's a Russian asset," etc), you'll sound silly and people will stop listening. But looking at 2015-25, the "This is REALLY BAD" journos were right 90% of the time. The "calm down" crew? Mostly wrong.
