These is a troubling quote because this is not how it’s supposed to work. Fire safety rules are supposed to balance cost and benefit, not just push for any possible risk reduction no matter the cost.

An RFC (Request For Comment) is a kind of document systems engineers write to describe how something might work.

They're usually drier than dry, but big points to writing on this one: I think even if you'd never read an RFC in your life you could understand the gist. (+engineering take: I like it!)
"Find friends by phone" is a common tool in social networks. We're proposing a secure scheme and requesting comments from the dev community.

Goals:
・Double opt-in: you're not findable by your phone unless YOU use the tool
・Secure to enumeration attacks
・Resistant to decryption if compromised
Request For Comments: A secure contact import scheme for social networks | Bluesky
This article outlines plans for a future Bluesky feature \- it doesn’t exist yet\! By sharing our ideas early, we hope to solicit feedback from the community.

2025 is a time of choosing; what will each of us do to make sure the good things we value continue? Their enemies are emboldened, and every useful institution will need defending.
The legendary HOPE hacking conference has been banned from its venue at St. John's University over what the university seems to be calling an "anti-police agenda." Part of a broader crackdown on security research / hacking / open source: www.404media.co/hope-hacking...

i would have said this is true a year ago (as someone who worked at fastly! you don't need a CDN for your little blog!) but now that LLMs are scraping every site thousands of times (my little blog gets hundreds of LLM bots a day, according to CF) you can actually blow through bandwidth limits

Lots of things to like about her platform, including how pro transit she is
Rev. Rae Huang has officially launched her campaign for mayor of LA. Her platform and messaging are born out of a decade of movement organizing in LA, I really think she’s a one of a kind candidate.

FUCK YES. I’m so proud to see this response from Charlotte. I grew up in Raleigh and spent a ton of time in Charlotte (a delightful amtrak ride away!) and this is exactly what i’d expect. Discount the south at your peril, these folks are prepared to fight back
Incredible video from Reddit (too large to upload the screencap). CBP agents attempt to detain a flower vendor and end up getting chased into a vacant lot by a crowd of teenagers. What a bunch of impotent sad sacks.

I think we lost something when way fewer people online as a proportion of the whole started to have direct personal experience of moderating a forum or online community - though at least Reddit still exists
I can really tell you didn’t grow up on Internet forums if you’re shocked and indignant about “sometimes even human moderators make capricious and inscrutable decisions that you don’t like”

BASH: We have seen these attacks from the president at other people. It's not new. And I haven't heard you speak out about it until it was directed at you.

MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE: I think that's fair criticism. And I would like to say, humbly, I'm sorry for taking part in the toxic politics.

I'm seeing people wonder why ICE is going after Charlotte.

ICE has been at war with Charlotte's sheriff ever since he won in 2018.

We'd covered this at Bolts back in the day; this quote is from that sheriff:
“When the 8 African American sheriffs took over the largest counties in North Carolina, it became a threat to the good ol’ boy system,” says the sheriff of Charlotte. These new sheriffs broke ties with ICE.

But GOP lawmakers cracked down this week, overbidding the governor’s veto to adopt this law:
North Carolina GOP Is Cracking Down on the Black Sheriffs Who Stood Up to ICE
Boosted by new supermajorities, Republicans are closing in on legislation to mandate more collaboration with ICE and preempt local policies hard-won by immigrants’ rights advocates.

I have a series of new glass mini wreaths in the shop. They're gorgeous on Christmas trees but also look great as wall hangings. $50.

I'm going to be adding more new stuff over the next few days as my health allows and will give 10% of this weekend's sales to the Roadrunner Food Bank.
