i don't think this is even a real statistical anomaly anymore. it seems like there's someone in the crowd at every mass shooting who has been through it before. this doesn't have to be our shared cultural experience.

I think it’s normal to go through an anti-Beatles (or at least a “Beatles are overrated”) phase! But good taste will bring you back to them eventually. There’s no serious argument against their influence. All your faves love the Beatles!
Yeah, people have always pushed back against the Beatles in every generation because of the ubiquity and sort of assigned required reverence, but all my friends my age into grunge and indie etc in the 90s loved the Beatles. Even Kurt loved the Beatles!
As someone who is this guy's age I can tell you 100% that if you were into Pixies, Nirvana, 120 Minutes stuff, etc. but didn't like the Beatles you had to have worked hard to contort yourself into that special little box. Your enemy, if you absolutely needed one, was hair metal. GTFO here with this.

To this day I cannot watch those music biopics—even the ones I like!—without thinking about Walk Hard
a movie so sharp and funny that it basically killed the musical biopic for a decade

To paraphrase the late, great Mitch Hedberg: Nigel Farage used to be racist. He still is, but he used to be, too.
Wow, the dam has really broken on allegations about Farage’s racism when he was at school. There was nothing like this intensity during Brexit - I think it says a lot about how much more dangerous he is now perceived to be. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

reminded of eric williams's observation about britain's relationship to its history with slavery. "British historians wrote almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it."
holy shit: “Among the 2,000 UK adults surveyed, 85% were unaware that Britain forcibly transported more than 3 million Africans to the Caribbean, 89% did not know that Britain enslaved people in the Caribbean for more than 300 years” www.theguardian.com/world/2025/n...

Sherrill is certainly a centrist—she’s probably to the right of Senate Dem leadership—but she understands that the people that got her elected won’t stand for this. This will be the dividing line between he Democrats next year: who gets that base is tired of elitist gerontocracy, and who doesn’t?
This is really good to see: Miki Sherrill just put out a statement sharply criticizing the Senate Dems' pending cave in the government shutdown, ripping it as "malpractice" and a betrayal of the people who are "counting on us to fight for them." Sherrill knows what drove her victory. Wake up, Dems.

i feel like there should be more complex tactical solutions than "bring on all the attackers".

The subtext of this comment is that the Mayor of Boston is Asian-American, whereas the Mayor of Chicago (like almost everyone else that Trump refers to as “a low IQ person”) is Black.
Trump: "Boston had a bad mayor who at least is a reasonable IQ person. Most of them are low IQ. I mean, what's going on in Chicago ... "

Curious if MAGA knows that "God Bless America" was written by someone not born in America who arrived here without any authorization whatsoever and yet, through the woke policies of the time, was allowed to stay and to become a naturalized citizen. So very "open borders."

They’re shooting priests in the head with pepper balls. There is no moral appeal to these fascist thugs that can possibly work. They should be utterly shunned from polite society and the shame of this should follow them the rest of their lives.
CW: protester being struck in the head by a pepper ball

Footage I took earlier of the moment Reverend David Black, a regular protester outside of the Broadview Detention Center, was shot in the head with a pepper ball by ICE agents on the roof of the facility.

What a fucking joke. Douthat will say or do anything if the thugs shredding the Constitution can get him one step closer to his Christofascist dreams. He’s an intellectual weakling of the highest order.
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“Many stewards of cultural institutions are aware that they have a problem,” our columnist Ross Douthat writes. “But they are still dealing with internal ideological pressures — so to be able to reform, they need pressure from the outside to do the right thing.”

Can’t wait to see what the “free speech absolutists” in the comedy world have to say about this!!!!
Sinclair, run by right-wing media mogul David Smith, says suspending the Jimmy Kimmel show isn’t enough. It is going to run a tribute to Kirk during Kimmel’s time slot.

Sinclair stations will run not consider putting Kimmel back on air until he apologizes and donates to Turning Point USA
