TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

This decision is a big deal because one of the things that defeats probable cause is community ties.

It’s important to note from a military perspective that if a subordinate is about to give an unlawful order & his senior knows about it, it’s also a requirement for the senior official to stop him from executing it. And then counsel/discipline him.

Someone made the point - I think Adam Kinzinger - that the problem is it’s one thing to refuse to murder someone if ordered. It’s another to refuse an order where you yourself don’t have the full context and couldn’t possibly - but someone above you does/did

Sort of noteworthy that in a field typically full of complex hypotheticals and heavy on fact-specific circumstances, I've really not seen any serious IHL/LOAC voices argue these strikes are anything but virtually certainly unlawful

This is heartbreakingly cruel and hypocritical. The same admin that has redefined refugee status to cover white South Africans is now going to drown thousands of refugees already approved for their status in red tape, potentially even seeking to strip some of their status and deport them.
Trump Admin planning a rule to re-decide whether *every* refugee who entered under Biden meets their criteria for a refugee. That’s 230,000 people! And no appeals!
